There are some interesting things happening in this story in The Age
newspaper between informal twitter users reporting first hand what was
happening, confused retweets and the later wave of formal journalists
assembling a news story. Fascinating stuff to reflect upon as it gives some
clues about the very different media dynamics of news communicated by
informal social networks and formal journalists.
"Just as newsrooms were starting to stir with the rumoured explosion of a
Qantas plane off Indonesia, and journalists began making calls to hotels on
the island of Batam, Twitter was recording thousands of versions of what
might have happened. "
