We placed our student emails with Google late last year and its been quite a successful move. Students like the system, they have about 7 gig of storage (far more than we can provide) and some have used the Google docs to complete school tasks, finishing off at home what they cant complete at school. Account management is simple, setting up groups is easy if a little tedious and our student email server is now managed by Google somewhere and it does not cost us anything.

Interesting reading. Our school was contemplating the same move with
emails by using Gmail (as well as using the other Google apps available).
Still in intial discussion stages at the moment.
Google offers some education pricing for this if you want more control in
setting addresses up with your domain. Not sure about monitoring though as
sometimes we get requests from co-ordinators to view student emails if
there is a problem such as bullying, etc.
