[elearning] 1:1 which way do we go?

Agree wholeheartedly with that approach and we will be looking at
doing that here- although we will still get dedicated desktops for
graphics work. My other concern was the scenario where although you
recommend a particular package (say Photoshop as the classic example),
you get a family(ies) who decide that they already have a legal copy
of another app (Paint) or decide the money could be better spent and
go Gimp, the teacher would have conniptions trying to sort out all the
variations of how to achieve a particular task. As a parent, I would
not fork out for software for my kids given I (and they) know what can
be done with FLOSS.
I would see it as an opportunity, IMHO we are not here to teach
particular packages, but use the packages to achieve what you want to
teach and finding out about all the different packages is fun (for
me), but not everyone shares my view....
Admittedly when it comes to most software these days you could spend a
lifetime specialising in one app and still not be familiar with all
it's features (most of which are so far beyond what kids need
anyway...) and it can be wasted time trying to figure more than one
app. Personally I would simply say we use FLOSS and that's that, but
(blah blah, industry standard, blah blah, I can only use MSOffice,
blah blah, we don't support that, blah blah, DEECD agreement...)
Cheers
