Lately, I have been hearing more and more about open education initiatives.
Here is an interesting (and I notice free!) workshop in NSW that is running.
Worth considering registering if you may be in the area at the end of
November.

Open Education Workshop 2008
----------------------------
The Australian Service for Knowledge of Open Source Software (ASK-OSS)
supported by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training,
is hosting a workshop to explore Open Education in teaching, learning
and research across schools and universities. We invite you to
participate in this strategic event where you will discover Open
Education initiatives around the world, as well as help contribute to
the direction of Open Education in Australia for 2009 and beyond.
Purpose of the event
--------------------
To assist school educators, researchers, lecturers, principals,
administrators and education policy makers to learn about and discuss
Open Education, and to workshop directions for 2009. Speakers and
participants will share knowledge on different approaches to Open
Education, best practices and hear examples of practical solutions.
This workshop aims to document the state of Open Education in Australia,
identify the needs of the sector, propel the discussion forward, and
initiate ongoing sector-wide collaboration.
Towards an Open Education Strategy for Australia
------------------------------------------------
A key activity of the workshop is a facilitated discussion to contribute
to an open education strategy for cross sector collaboration, and to
build skills and document best practice for the future.

Education including;

* Open Source Software for education and research
* Open resource and content licensing for distribution
* Open collaboration
* Case studies from higher education and schools
Before lunch the focus sharpens with participants breaking into separate
streams to examine the particular needs and experiences of the Higher
Education sector and the Schools Sector. Each stream will include a
series of lightning talks from participants to share stories of Open
Education practice, and time to discuss specific sector topics such as
the Digital Education Revolution for schools, and the move towards more
open research models for Higher Education.
The event will also feature a hands on demonstration for participants to
explore cross-platform Open Source applications for teaching and
learning including desktop applications, learning environments,
collaboration and publishing tools and more. Each participant gets an
OpenDisc or OpenSourceMac CD to take home depending on their preferred
system.
After lunch the streams unite for a final series of plenary talks
exploring:
* Working with the Free and Open Source Software
community and technologies
* Professional learning and skills development
The day concludes with an active session engaging all participants in
