This sounds like a great program Roland...
The cost for obsolete/non working equipment is a drag, understandable as they then deal with them properly...
preferring a minimum of 5 computers for pick up...(you could get a group of people together to pool their dead/old computers.
At least you know the computers are not just going to landfill, but are being properly recycled, and the cost is probably similar to a tip run :) but smiling for the environment :):)
cheers
Suz

There is an interesting group called Computerbank Victoria that recycles donated computers with quality free software and distributes them to disadvantaged individuals and community groups. Computerbank is run by volunteers and runs free training in Openoffice and Gimp.

No hardware left behind. Cool :-)
Throwing old computer hardware into landfill just adds to long term toxic issues. It is likewise foolish and irresponsible to pretend that it isn't our problem, offloading it to students or thinking that school dumpster rubbish is recycled. Taking ownership of this problem is an important first step.

Last year, VITTA issued a position statement on IT waste in their Infonet and there was a healthy discussion late last year (ironically on the I T off-topic mailing list <http://www.edulists.com.au/mailman/listinfo/offtopic> !) I would welcome any updates or new local initiatives we should consider adding. :-)
