Dear Liz, thanks for the information and thankyou for leading the project, great idea and my college would like to help out as well. I like your idea of a community project, our kids are into that as well. Please send the relevant requirements through when your ready, I then can design a brief for our classes were they can also include a laser print of the animal on the box each student makes just to value add.

Hi everyone,
Hope you’re enjoying the holidays.
I’m hoping I can get you and your schools on board to help with this project I’m coordinating.
In response to the callout for wildlife boxes for all communities affected by the fires, I decided that I would organise my Year 9 and 10 students to all build a wild life box. (we don’t run PDT in year 7 and 8), as their first project for this year. Upon speaking to another teacher from a local school, she said that she would do the same with her students which got me thinking to present it to all PDT teachers.
I am in contact with the local community in Mallacoota as well as the wildlife rescue teams and they said they need hundreds of boxes and they would welcome as many as we could make. The wildlife rescue teams have all the measurements and patterns for each of the animals, specific hole sizes for specific birds, for bats and possums. The leg work as far as this side of things has been done. I thought I would get students to choose an animal they are building for and research the animal, its habitat, breading etc as their planning.
Apparently Bunnings is donating materials which is great, but do require a letter on a letterhead. I’m in the process of putting a letter together from my school which I will share with you all and you can adjust to your requirements.
At this stage I just want to get an indication of which teachers and schools would like to do this with their students. For me its about my kids being community minded and giving to others and this I think is a great way of facilitating this. I have a contact with a teacher at Mallacoota Secondary College who may join us up with students from the school which would be fantastic also. I’ve registered as a coordinator for this project so please go directly through me so as not to overload the wild life teams with more correspondence.
I’m hoping you are just as excited by the possibilities as I am and will jump on board. Any suggestions welcomed also.
Kind regards,
Liz
