I felt like it was a bit of a Frankenstein’s Monster in terms of the SAT interpretation. Trying to cobble together assessable material to make a whole, but from parts that really don’t unify in any way.
For example, if you can’t/don’t begin construction of the SAT, you run a teacher-set task that allows them to show proficiency and quality/project management. If you have started, you can specify an undetermined end-point that’s equitable (ie. All parts cut out). I understand this detail and attempt to make room for assessable items here, but I remain concerned about the underlying implications of that interpretation of the criteria.
If it’s VCAA’s position that it is permissible to pick-and-choose emphasis on SAT criteria indicators, outright ignore others, and define our own endpoints for our cohort (and to be clear, the SAT task is unchanged both in assessment indicators and study design) and it’s up to teachers to “decide what indicators to assess when ranking student achievement within the cohort”, then that is permissible in all years. In theory, we could conduct the SAT this way (completing no product, teacher set pre-packaged tasks) or only the bits we want to emphasise and assess, every year and do just fine – which is not the essence of the Study. It’s problematic.
I understand they want us to be flexible, but it feels like we’re the only ones being flexible.

Hi Everyone,
So I just watched the VCAA video, to summaries –
1. All 9 criteria points to be applied but modified indicators where some will not be used.
2. All about the ranking of students - individual schools. Not against other schools.
3. Same indicators need to be applied for all your students – consistency for your group.
4. Products will not be finished. (there is a surprise!)
5. Those students yet to start must complete a separate prac task directed from teacher? What happens if we do not return term 4? Can we use the materials testing completed in term 2? Again, it is delaying applying these criteria points!!!
I still completely disagree, if the process is all about ranking students, then I can rank the class based on SAT criteria 1-5 and how well I know them. They do not even need to commence prac for me to make this decision….
Some aspects are clearer, whilst others seem to complicate things even further!!!
I am, as I am sure others will, be interested in other people’s views!!
Cheers for now
Dean.

The VCAA have just published some further advice to support VCE teachers of Product Design and Technology and Systems Engineering with assessment of the SATs in 2020 during the period of remote and flexible learning. This information is on the VCAA website but this will be down over the weekend due to maintenance testing, so we have direct links to teach one here:

FAQs for remote and flexible learning have also been updated for PD&T teachers. This will be sent out to school in a Notice to Schools next week too.
