Thanks Stuart for sharing the response and your reply. Interesting choice of language they used re indicators of some criteria, not sure if they really get what’s involved in the criteria relevant to the potential manufactured product. Maybe their just playing the party line re the information you received. Thanks again at least their talking to one of us. Shame they couldn’t give us something before your intervention.

Dear all

This afternoon I received a response from the VCAA regarding Product Design and Technology. It doesn’t give a definitive outcome but indicates what the VCAA viewpoint is. Please see below. My response follows and is representative of the position my school is in. I thought I would share given the absence of any other communication from the VCAA.

Hi Stuart

Thanks for your email. The VCAA will be providing more advice shortly but we are waiting on ministerial approval. We will let schools know when this advice is provided, and published it on the VCAA COVID-19 webpage.

For the School-assessed Task in Product Design and Technology, all the criteria need to be used when assessing student work. However, not all indicators listed for each criterion may be used. Therefore, teachers can use some or all indicators listed for each criterion to form a judgement about student work. Teachers need to ensure that the same indicators are used for the assessment of all student work at the school and that the conditions to undertake the SAT does not privilege or disadvantage certain groups of students within the school cohort – this is especially relevant to PDT where there are various materials being used e.g. textiles versus wood.

The purpose of school-based assessment is to discriminate and rank your school cohort so the SAT results for your school cohort should reflect the performance and relative ranking of student results across the whole assessment scale. Students may not necessarily complete a product but teachers can use the indicators listed for each criteria to determine this ranking of their cohort of students. i.e. the purpose of the SAT is to rank your cohort of students only.

I trust this addresses your query.

My response, which may not reflect everyone’s position, is below.

Thank you for getting back to me.

I am not sure I fully understand how to carry out assessment based on this direction. It is impossible to assess criteria 6-9 in the absence of a product with the exception of perhaps Criteria 9 and the indicator that relates to User instructions. Criteria 6-9 hinge on there being an actual product be it a prototype or a fully functional product. Many students have not been in any position to start any manufacturing through textiles or resistant materials. Those that have will not be in a position to finish. Therefore assessment, to be consistent, should be based on what all Victorian students should have been able to achieve given the circumstances. This would be criteria 1-5.

Maybe I have misunderstood your statement and I am sorry if I have but if you are expecting all criteria to have an assessment, then this is not going to be possible for many schools. Even if we were to return to school in two weeks time, the pressure and associated OH&S risks with manufacturing and the impact on other studies would be too much for all concerned not to mention irresponsible. We have lost too much time to uncertainty and need to move on with clarity and reason.

Discussions held with DATTA Vic members and other teachers have resulted in agreed beliefs and positions.

I know it’s a busy time and a very stressful one but could you please clarify your position on this.

Many thanks

Stuart

All fair and good comments

How disappointing to see no VCAA leadership and active support for Year 12 students and teachers in this subject study area. I am certainly surprised that clarity around all the issues raised were not addressed earlier. The extra stress put on students and staff completing practical studies MUST be recognised. Staff think on their feet on a day to day basis, it is time for management and associated representatives to step up and act.

Keep asking the questions and being the champion for your students.

My personal opinion is that it is unreasonable and unrealistic that sections 6-9 be assessed.
· Access to facilities, staff, materials and time will differ across schools
· Ability for students to travel to and from school without impacting other subjects due to travel times etc will be challenging and counter productive.
· Increased challenges of social distancing and assisting with practical tasks will present real OH&S risk.
· Increased pressure and urgency with reduced timelines will also present increased OH&S risk to both staff and students.
· Restrictions on supplies, materials and deliveries will have a huge impact on when production may start disadvantaging students even more.
· Inequity.

I am sure there are many more reasons.

Students and Staff need direction and certainty. I know that there are big decisions to be made but surely after the first lockdown, a contingent plan was made should there be another lockdown.

Just my thoughts

My principal said in her latest email

'I know that there may be some subjects for whom it will be particularly difficult to conduct remote assessments (eg. where there is a practical component). The Operations Guide makes some reference to possible on-site exemptions for “mandatory assessments”, and states that ‘further advice will be provided’. So we may be able to make arrangements in special circumstances, but I expect this to be sparing.'

I hope the further advice is soon. A week and a half has already elapsed.

Hi,

For systems Engineering, I think it's going to be all but impossible to finish or complete part of the practical SAT models. I highly doubt we can even complete testing of "the control aspect" of our models.
So there is criteria 4-7 gone! Criteria 8 is about the project evaluations....not sure how this can be done without further constuctions of project models.

I have no idea how VCAA expect us to assess the SAT for criterias 4-8.

Criteria's 1-3 has been assessed though, so that's something.

My unit 3/4 students are chomping at the bit for information. I can't provide any. All we can do is prepare for exams and hope they will be able to do those!

Good luck everyone! Tough times.

Hi all -

Is anyone hearing any rumblings from the VCAA around modifications to practical components yet? I know that in some of the 20 studies affected by practical Unit 4 content, it's going to have a big impact.

>From the chats I've had with VCAA so far, and just in general updates from their publications, this is the advice:

"The examination dates provide sufficient time for teachers and students to complete adjusted VCE Unit 4 learning and school-based assessments, and to adequately prepare for the examinations. They also allow for VCE and VCAL students to receive their results and ATARs on 30 December as per the current schedule."

Thoughts? I feel like we have been given a lovely extra 2 weeks or so in Term 4, but our Unit 4 SAT (around 33% of their year mark) was predominantly unchanged barring the exceptions on conducting first person materials tests, and the vague direction that we could make a prototype instead (despite having no documentation of that being sufficient in the modified study design, and leaving aside that a prototype needs to use the same scale/equivalent processes but exchanging materials/technologies).

Anyone heard anything better, or more complete?

Hi everyone
Hope you are all well.
My students completed the calico toile for the preferred option and are now doing the working drawing and the scheduled production plan for the final product, which is criteria 4. Obviously they will not be able to complete the final product.
Part of criteria 5 - how the product would be manufactured in industry can be done as well, which my students have already done.
Criteria 6,7,8 and most of 9 cannot be done.
With criteria 9 - user instruction labels,/ care label, my students did this as a part of the working drawing.
What are your thoughts?

Hi David,

As of yet, no. To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been any clear instruction or directive with how teachers move forward with the prac element - U4O2 and obviously this will have an impact on U4O3 SAT.

The SAC is ok, we can do that remotely under strict times and probably best to offer as an 'open book'.

My Year 12 are becoming anxious as they really want to make their products...

At this stage, as soon as students have completed the SAC, we will begin to prep for the exam...

Student's are finalising SAT criteria 4-5...

Feedback welcomed

Regards

Dean.

Subject: [Design and Technology] Unit 4 - VCAA

David Pitt Head of Department - Design Technology.
