Evening all,

Certainly trust everyone is keeping strong through these tough times. We’re all here to help one another and times like this bring us “closer” together even if it’s not physically.

This isn’t a commercial post, but we’ve had a few requests from teachers to provide ideas on projects for students working from home. This hospital bed https://www.toolsforschools.com.au/imagine-kit-hospital-bed.html is an idea that we came up with and  the website goes over the details of how to implement a design brief to surround this project which we can provide to save you time. You can edit to suit as needs be.

Simply put, the students will receive a hospital bed pre-cut, all they have to do is assemble (no tools required) as per the instructions and add their own flare to it to create a protective hospital bed for infectious patients. The best student design will be reviewed by Modsel (Australian medical bed manufacturer) for potential real-life prototyping and they will also receive a Drone Kit.

As I say, this isn’t a commercial post, Tools For Schools isn’t making any profit out of this concept, we are purely doing all we can to support our teachers, and support our students as they face working from home.

Its a worry

Some schools with more money than mine are allowing textiles students to take home machines but then it puts other students who dont have access at a huge disadvantage. My students who have just cut most of their pieces for their furniture product are unable to do any more! I can only see two scenarios happening. Cutting down the criteria or allowing limited access for PD students. The second is unlikely due to the ongoing pandemic and introduction of stage 4.

I hope they release information for us today.

So, at present, onsite prac is 100% off the table.  If VCAA moves on that, then it’d be permissible to travel to accommodate work.

At the moment though, admin, facilities, operations and maintenance, and supervising staff for essential workers are really the only people have reason to continue to be on-site from the advice given so far.  Note the term “supervise” not “teach”.  It can be anyone with a WWCC at this point, and in many school contexts probably will be, and the emphasis isn’t on educating but on maintaining a safe environment while they undertake flexible work.

At the moment, we are stuck.

It would not be.

Travelling for work purposes, where that work cannot be completed remotely, is completely within the rules and hasno limitations on distance.  However you would need to have a permit stating the need for the work to be conducted at school (direct supervision of practical activities), and your school would need to corroborate and control that – as would the DHHS and VCAA and DEECD, which I don’t see happening yet, or maybe at all.

In the end though, travel for work is exempt, but only for essential work that cannot be conducted from home.  It’s not illegal to drive to school.

Hi Liz, it’s hard to see how the coming weeks will plan out. Maybe yr 12 students doing prac subjects as ours will be allowed to go in for an afternoon once a week for production. Who knows at this stage. I know that most of my students don’t have sewing machines etc at home so production will come to a halt. Just as we were getting in to it! So this week and next its writing up about tools and equipment, risk assessment tables and SAC no. 3. As for yr 11 ……………………………….

Hi All,

Those teaching Year 11 and 12 will no doubt be as depressed as I am with todays news. It took VCAA several weeks to come up with a solution to the last lockdown. Is anyone foreseeing what might happen with this scenario?

Mr Year 11’s are also compromised as I did both Unit 1 and 2 folios first semester and presently working on Unit 2 production atm.

It’s a nightmare. Poor kids, I feel for them all.
