Thanks Felicity,
Have just watched Daniel Andrews update from this morning and now realise that all of term 2 will be online so at least that makes it clearer and something to plan towards.
Good to see that small groups of students for practical classes are able to attend school for several lessons so this may get the year 12’s through although can this be everyday for PDT I guess my school will need to address that.
I was thinking exactly the same with my Unit 1 students to begin the folio for Unit 2 and complete that ready for production in both terms 3 and 4. This would make sense as I’m sure that school won’t be allowing them to attend the workshop but will wait to hear directly. I like the idea of the foamcore prototypes. My Unit 1 students all began with a standard lamp and redesigning. We could do some prototype shades or something that could be laser cut and assembled. I was thinking even using clay or some modelling compound as the lamps are more organic shapes than geometric.
My year 9’s are making flatpack stools/tables so can do that and laser cut at school.
My year 10’s are creating an ‘organic wall-mounted functional piece’ (deliberately left it open so it could be mirror, coat hooks, book case etc) I guess this could be done on laser cutter from ply and Perspex even.
Thanks for ideas Felicity. Always good to get ideas from others.
What are others thinking of doing?
Cheers,
Liz

Hi Liz,
As we had been working remotely for the last 3 weeks of term 1 at our school, we have already been thinking about what to do with our students.
We think we will make foam core/cardboard prototypes for production for Unit 1 as this can be done from home- our students were all making smaller products so this would be possible. Then maybe we will laser cut or 3d print components for them that they draw up. They would be modified designs of their products.
Our year 11s asked if they could just do their unit 2 folios in terms 2 so if they return in term 3 they can make the 2 products they have designed in the first half of the year. So that is something we might be about to partly do as well.
I was also thinking of conducting some of the materials/process tests myself via video link with the yr 12s for criteria 5 and they write them up like a science prac observation- that is if I can get into the workshop as school. I’ve been conducting my classes that way for 3 weeks. The students can do all of the prep work as far at the requirements of the tests are and then write up the results. I suppose we will have to wait and hear from the VCAA about this though. I would basically just be their hands etc. Don’t know if that would be allowed but might work.

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all doing okay.
Well its clear that we will be teaching online for several weeks to come, possibly the entire term.
Just wondering how people are going to manage their Unit 1 classes. ie folio done and now into production.
My Unit 3’s are still working on their folio and hopefully their production can be extended into Term 4 and we can focus on Unit 4 SAC now instead. Waiting to hear more
from VCAA on this.
What are peoples interpretation of the situation and how you will manage your classes and students remotely? I have ideas but would like peoples thoughts to include
in the mix.
Cheers,
Liz
