Hi Robin
Thank you for your queries regarding the revised Product Design and Technology study design.
The reference made to text about the evaluation criteria is correct as students need to use the evaluation criteria to inform and justify the selected design option. The text for Design options included in the product design process is identical to the text in the current study design. These cross study specifications need to be read in conjunction with the key knowledge and key skills where there is information about the role of criteria to inform and justify design option selection and developing evaluation criteria for design options.
The reference to ‘the process used to evaluate the success of the product’ is asking students to outline the process they need to follow (strategies) to determine ways to judge whether they have met the requirements of each criterion that is used to evaluate the success of the finished product.
The text in this study design is more succinct than the current version. The VCAA will run a webinar in Term 3 to provide an overview of the revised study design as well as continue to offer professional learning for teachers at the School-assessed Task sessions held at the beginning of year.
Cheers, Leanne

Hi Leanne,
There appears to be a typo in the new Product design and technology Study Design 2018 or it could be that I can’t make sense of the evaluation criteria and need it explained.
Will there be a Professional Development sessions for teachers soon to explain the changes so that we can prepare for next year ?
Evaluation criteria
Throughout Units 1 to 4, students develop evaluation criteria from the design brief. These criteria are used to inform and justify the selected design option, and evaluate the success of the finished product in relation to solving the design problem for the end-user/s. Each criterion has four parts:
• a question
• justification and relevance to the design brief
• the process used to evaluate the success of the product
• how the finished product could be tested or checked.
Justify the selected design option – in the Product design process wheel it states “justification of the preferred option”. The preferred option is also on pages 12, 13, 17,18 and 24. The preferred option is not mentioned in the above evaluation criteria only “justify the design option” I thought that it should be “design options” plural but one preferred option singular and that only the preferred option was justified. I found this confusing.
Also confusing is that in the evaluation of the design options you can only ask questions or evaluate what can be seen in the drawing ie. You can’t evaluation whether it will come in on budget because that is impossible to work out at this stage as no preferred option has been chosen and costed. You can evaluation if it will be completed by the due date either because a production plan hasn’t been completed. So I can’t understand that either.
I really can’t understand what is meant by “ the process used to evaluate the success of the product” I have spoken to and been in email contact with about 10 experienced PD&T teachers whom I met through exam marking. No one can explain it to me.
Please clarify these issues for me. I really do look forward to your reply as these and a couple of other issues in the new study design, are concerning me.
