Thanks for bring this topic up Suzanne it reminded me of the mixed classes I taught previously (as I mentioned already). Our school is going through an era where the student numbers are falling, so I have had discussions with a student who would like to do textiles in Year 12 instead of wood. She feels there would be others who would like to do textiles, so I will now encourage this happen to help my numbers for 2018.
Regards, David Foster

Ahhhh I see where this is coming from now?. As our new prin is from uni high?
A class of 12 would be great?. We were told we could only run with over 20 the past couple of years? So I was envisioning a huge unmanageable class?.

Hi Suzanne
I teach a mixed fashion/furniture year 12 class and have done so for a decade or two now. Our VCE classes are quite small but would be non existant if we couldnt offer both.I have 12 this year. 6 doing textiles 6 timber. All the theory is done as one group and previously I have had both the wood room and textiles rooms available at the same time for the prac component. This year yr 11 classes are running at the same time but there is a spare room next door to the wood room and we have 6 spare machines that I can take. Its a pain and requires lots of organisation but if I want the class to run it has to be done. I do spend most of my time in the wood room for safety reasons. The textiles students are usually self sufficient. It can work but requires an understanding timetabler and a teacher who doesnt mind being run off her feet :-)

I have heard on the grapevine the powers above are looking at combining VCE PDT Textiles and Wood?
Is that even possible? Permissible? even if there was some demi god with suitable skills in both (technically I could but it?s been a while since I have played with wood, never at VCE level)
Logistics here with two totally different rooms in different buildings for the different materials would make it nigh impossible, unless we have a split class with the prac time in different room?
Naturally nothing has been said to us in person? just what we are picking up on?. And we have been told other schools do it? so very curious as to anyone who does?.
I would assume a purpose built technology space would make it possible? we don?t have that.
Not sure which other lists to send this to? and even who the VCE tech person is now at VCAA.
Help!!
Anyone doing this successfully/unsuccessfully
Cheers
Suzanne

Yes? lacking in support? just looking for ?easy? options for them I think? I would not feel comfortable with rooms in different buildings having unsupervised students in either material.

I taught both subjects at the same time some 15 years ago but I started with one student doing textiles and she was a motivated person. The next year we had 3 girls doing it and in the end my school had to have a separate textile class as it had reached 12 students. That's how we got textiles going and it was also helped by the growing numbers of students as the school grew.
As mentioned before the theory is the same but my girls went into another room and they were able to get in a school admin person who was good at sewing to help the girls.
Now with the folio expectations being over top now it could make it very possible as back then more time was given to the prac work.
You need support from your school to make it possible for you to run these mixed classes. They saw my situation as a bit of a novelty but we proved them wrong and got it done.
Don't be afraid but make sure your school is prepared to help you with the prac time, even maybe a volunteer person from the community might help. I used to amuse the class by providing examples of both materials in my class discussions.
I would be happy to speak to you if you ever wanted too.
Cheers, David Foster
