The University of Melbourne launches new Bachelor of Design

As we near the end of Term 1, I write to advise you of an exciting new course offering from the University of Melbourne, set to commence in Semester 1, 2017.

The new Bachelor of Design is a three-year, studio and workshop based degree with 11 possible majors, aimed at fostering a new generation of design professionals. Developed through feedback from students and industry, it will provide an undergraduate education that responds to the needs and challenges facing built and designed environments in contemporary society.

The Bachelor of Design aligns strongly with professionally accredited graduate programs and offers students great flexibility in the form of new majors, minors and an array of unique specialisations.

Majors in the new program include: architecture, construction, computing, civil systems, digital media, landscape architecture, mechanical systems, property, spatial systems, urban planning, and visual and performance design.

The Bachelor of Design appeals to those students who are passionate about applying the principles of design to a wide range of disciplines and professions - from the level of the metropolis to mid-scale developments right through to micro-structures.

Further information regarding the Bachelor of Design is available online at:http://bdes.unimelb.edu.au/

To further strengthen our environmental sciences teaching, and ensure our degrees remain industry leading, we will conduct a review throughout 2016. The review will consider the intersection of arts and sciences in sustainability and environment, and how the University's undergraduate offering can best complement our outstanding graduate options in the field.

To allow the review to proceed, there will be no intake into the Bachelor of Environments in 2017. Current Environments students will be unaffected by these changes and the pathways into our Masters programs remain unchanged. New students interested in studying environmental science and sustainability in 2017 will access these studies through the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts.

This information was conveyed to Australian secondary schools last week via Careers Update - our e-newsletter for Careers Practitioners.

We thank you for your continued support of the University and the Melbourne Curriculum within your school community.

Yours sincerely,

Wendy Holden
