Assuming proper risk management – yes.
No worries about that – highlighted yellow.
Of course, this involves having students pass a “safe use competency test”, essentially ensuring students can demonstrate and explain how to follow the Risk Controls you have in place and use the machine competently and safely within the guidelines you set. I tend to do them as a class.
Cutting
Shaping
Joining
Finishing
· Cold Metal Drop Saw
· Power Hacksaw
· Jig Saw
· Scroll saw
· Cold Metal Saw
· Small mitre saw (with simple drop saw action and work piece secured by clamps or similar constraint)
· Metal Cutting ‘Horizontal’ Band Saw
· Wood Lathe
· Metalworking Lathe
· Plunge Router – where used with either a template or guide fence or, a ball-bearing profile cutter
· Milling Machine
· Angle Grinder
· Welding
· Biscuit Jointer
· Dowling or Horizontal Drill
· Drill Press (Pedestal or Bench)
· Linisher (belt & Disc sander)
· Sanders (Belt & Orbital)
This is the department’s competency test (attached) – it’s a bit onerous. There are others that exists, both proprietary (onGuard, etc) and free, but you just need to make sure you document that they have passed some test explaining that they are competent, and have peace of mind that it explains enough to stand up in court! :D I know a lot of people edit and make their own from the Safe Use of Machinery booklets that you get during the course.

Subject: [Design and Technology] Purchase belt sander
Morning All,
We are in the process of looking at buying a new belt sander, Carbatec 6 inch, by 9 inch combo disc belt sander $350 approx, any advice if these can be operated by 7 year 7-8 students? Obviously thorough RA / RC will be implemented.
Regards
Dean.
