[Design and Technology] destech Digest, Vol 126, Issue 25

Hi all
I think it is not helpful to get so focussed on the specific terminology here, particularly as both terms are interchangeable in industry and in the wider world of product design. In all the reading I have done in the area, I haven't seen any clear distinction between the terms - they are both used to define the same process. I would agree that it is the concepts that underpin the terms that we want the students to understand, and this is what should be examined.
(By the way - both terms are referred in the study design, however Life Cycle Assessment is only referred to in the learning activities.)
In terms of the marking process, my understanding is that the team of exam markers come to a consensus about how each question is marked. I would hope/trust that sense would prevail and that the teachers who mark exams would agree that if a student shows an understanding of the concept of Life Cycle Analysis/Assessment, they would be given marks.
Regards
Jill

Maryann,
I understand that Life Cycle Analysis is the ‘approved’ term as per the updated study design. However, as this terminology was modified midway through a time period for the current study design, we have the issue that the Textbook uses the former language. In this circumstance, and as both terms are used in industry, I feel both titles should be accepted.
Again I reiterate are we testing students rote learning of terminology or their understanding and application of that terminology?
We do need clarification on this discussion by the VCAA as if this is the rule that will be applied I will spend valuable revision time on terminology!
Regards,
Melissa

Life cycle assessment is not in the study design. It is called life cycle analysis in the study design. Maryann Augustinus UHS

To clarify this question both Life cycle analysis and life cycle assessment
are in the study design therefore both are accepted when exams are marked.

I agree, although I use "analysis' in my teaching, some resources use
"assessment".
Either term is accurate in industry, as Stuart mentioned, and I think we are
just arguing semantics.
I would hope the question would ask them to explain or describe the
sustainability model, rather than identify it anyway. Aren't we assessing
the depth of their understanding and application of the concept of
sustainability, rather than their ability to recall rote learn 't facts?

I'm not sure why we don't give a mark for either. I understand that is in
the study design but see the link above.
Or google 'life cycle analyses' and see what comes up.

Just a reminder that LCA is life cycle analysis not assessment. If students
write 'assessment' in the exam they will get a 0.
