[Design and Technology] Top Designs

The fact that there is no wood products or folios in Top Designs is totally
disappointing, it is obvious to all.
I thought twice about taking students (wood focused) but will be taking a
group as I want them to see quality folios that address all the criteria in
the new study design.
My students have little appreciation for how the folio links together and
why they have to do a 4 part evaluation criteria for the finished product
and then a 3 part for the Product design process. They think I am a pain
for insisting that they identify, using colour, the Product design factors
in their design briefs etc. These are all significant changes that could
also come up in the exam so I want them to understand this.
My students need to see how other students have done this work and how the
new parts of the folio look - and it is different to previous years - in
some cases significantly different. What I don't want them to see are
folios that use the previous study design or folios that don't cover all the
criteria as that would just confuse them and as a teacher I then worry about
them making mistakes on the exam because of the confusion.
All the work is textiles except for a delicate set of silver jewellery but
the value to the wood students is the folio this year. There is nothing we
can do about the 2013 exhibition so I am hoping for a wood dominated
exhibition next year ! Let's hope it works that way and more wood teachers
put forward their students folios and products for selection.

Colleagues,
Perhaps discussion regarding the lack of representation of products that are
constructed mainly from wood in 2013 Top Designs could revisit the criteria
used by the Product Design and Technology Selection Panel (comprising
Product Design and Technology teachers) and how the situation can be
addressed during this year as students are working on their SATs to ensure
the 2014 Top Designs exhibition will include wood products.
CRITERIA
Product Design and Technology, Food and Technology and Systems Engineering
Works are selected that
* achieve an A+ or A.
* meet the assessment criteria at a very high standard and in
innovative, individual ways
* are accompanied by an exemplary folio that meets the assessment
criteria and demonstrates research and thorough development of ideas
* present a range of materials and creative uses of those materials
* demonstrate sound workshop practices
* are suitable for public exhibition and will fit exhibition
constraints including space and safe weight restrictions.

Well said Steve,

It is an absolute disgrace that there are no Product Design and Technology
(wood) students work on display in 2013. It is a slap in the face to all
high achieving students and their teachers who put in an extraordinary
amount of time and effort only to be told that some aspects of the study
design were not covered perfectly. In the Top designs application process,
the work only needed to be of A+ standard. Nowhere does it say that all
aspects of the work needed to be perfect. Many students who applied and
then subsequently rejected, were devastated to be told that from the 80 plus
pages that they produced, there was 1 or 2 pages that weren't perfect. Is
this the path PDT wood is taking? There should have been a showcase of work
from all areas of the PDT domain or a least a better excuse to totally
disregard work from our area.

Dear Colleagues
I took my Year 11 & 12 design tech wood students to top designs yesterday.
Spent a lesson beforehand explaining to the students, what to look for etc.
especially the year 11's, only to find that there were no wood folios. Have
I been out of the country the last 12 months, not knowing that Product
Design Technology Wood would not be represented? I know there were six
textiles displays and loved the display of past students work and if you
read their crits many of them explained the influence top design has had on
their career and subject choices. Really the effort these students go to in
producing a folio is remarkable and Top Designs is a fitting reward for
them, even to enter. This was really disappointing, can anyone explain?
