Hello Melissa,
Characteristics are generally related to qualities of a material such as
texture, feel, appearance (the way it looks), its grain structure,
shape, colour and other aesthetics.
Properties relate to the more physical, mechanical and chemical elements
that allow a material to carry out a particular function. Tensile
strength, compression strength, hardness, toughness, absorption,
elasticity, weatherability, stiffness and density are examples of this.
I teach the words differently so that students can make a table for
materials that show the characteristics and properties separately so
that they can see the clear distinction between them.
Also hope that this can help you to make your own informed decision.
Regards
Michael

Properties
Hi Melissa
All I can say is that ... when you really look into characteristics and
properties over a wide range of materials there is a lot of overlap.
Sometimes in timber, characteristics refers to the appearance which is
slightly different from your interpretation below for fabric, and
properties refers more to how the material behaves.
My approach is to use the two words together and not be too particular
about the difference.
Hope this helps - others may differ?
Jacinta

Subject: [Design and Technology] Material Characteristics & Properties
Hi all,
Hoping for some clarification of terms.
In the DESIGN FACTORS & APPLICATIONS the term Materials -
Characteristics & Properties is used. However when looking at fabrics
in the text books the term Characteristics never appears.
My interpretation was
Materials characteristics - what the fabric can do (i.e stretch,
transparent)
Material properties - The origin of the fabric and its construction (i.e
polyester plain weave)
However in the text books the use the term Properties to discuss what
the fabric can do and a whole range of terms to discuss the origin &
construction method (i.e identification, forms)
I am of the understanding we should be using consistent terminology
based on the Design Factors & Fundamentals.
Any advice/feedback welcome !
Thanks
