Hi all,
Having seen the proposed list of prohibited equipment in the recent
reference guide, my department and I have considerable concern that students
of D&T will have even less opportunity to be able to learn to use "real
life" equipment in "real life" situations but in a safe environment. VCE
students need to be able to have the choice of a number of "complex
processes" when designing and producing their products. The list limits the
number of processes available to them. It is inconsistent and, I believe,
has been developed with the minimisation of potential legal action in mind
rather than the safe education of our students.
Are there others out there who feel the way we do at my school? Was DATTA
involved with the development of these regulations? Can we build a united
front that could recommend a more sensible approach to using potentially
dangerous plant and equipment? Can DATTA be the united front and sensible
voice in this issue?
The public comment period for the changes closes on 25 July. My school will
be making some strong recommendations. I hope yours does too!
Something to ponder over the well-deserved break.
