A failure from the past
HOWARD is to spend $2.1 billion on 100 campuses after a decade when
governments of all colours have been amalgamating sites. That action has
made good educational and economic sense. It means larger campuses, with a
broader curriculum and fewer sites to manage.
Tech schools were a failure in the past. They were male-dominated and they
forced a career path decision at the age of 11. Once made, it was impossible
to change.
Technical education is based on a false premise: adroitness replaces
intellectual backwardness. In all my years teaching art and crafts, I saw no
evidence for that theory.
All children should experience a genuine school life, reaching across
technology to the arts and sciences. Reinventing a failed, divisive past is
a waste of money and denies children their rights.

So this is the extent of the State Government's support for Technical
education as promised at the last state election?

It appears that the promise of SSO's is something of chimera! The roll out
has some disturbing conditions.
Only SOME schools will have dibs on only SOME of the promised SSO poo. Most
schools will have to wait and the figures initially quoted for the roll out
over the time period have been subject to some creative accounting!
A bit disappointing.

Dear colleagues
For those teachers in Victorian government schools, DEECD is introducing
the Secondary Teacher Assistants Initiative. Technology Curriculum
Coordinators and teachers may wish to discuss with their principal the
possibility of an assistant in the technology area - however it is
necessary to refer to the attached memo and guidelines. This could be a
great opportunity for technology teachers to get some help in a similar
way to science and home economics/food technology areas.
Regards, Lorraine.
