[Design and Technology] Teacher resources

Last week I presented at the Victorian Association of Environmental
Education forum titled Essential Learning through Eco-design. Teachers
may be interested in the following resources. 

 

Dr.Karli Verghese made a presentation and discussed the Sustainable
Packaging Alliance www.sustainablepack.org. It has produced a chart
called the Packaging Materials Selector. 

This is A3 in size, laminated, double sided and is a comprehensive
description of materials and characteristics, packaging applications,
raw materials, density, recyclability, recycling rate, landfill impacts.
Materials include detailed information about 9 different kinds of
polymers, glass/metals, fibres. 

This kit could be useful if you are doing a unit on packaging and are
including Life Cycle Analysis. Karli said that they're offering it to
teachers at a special rate: around $30.

I also met Claire O'Boyle (formerly TEAV EO) who has been working on a
resource to support the Leonardo Da Vinci Machines exhibition. Claire
forwarded the following information for me to pass on to teachers:

 

The Leonardo Da Vinci Machines schools program can be downloaded for
free at www.voea.vic.edu.au 
School visits to the exhibition can be booked at this site also. 
 
The schools program encompasses primary and secondary units of work and
exhibition activity sheets. Topic range:

*             structures

*             mechanisms

*             flight

*             biomimicry (inspiration from nature) 

*             history of Leonardo's life/ a Leonardo guidebook

 

There are around 18 downloadable resources. Many of them are led by a
design, creativity and technology teaching focus.
