[Informatics] Class sizes 2022

Thanks Ben for the reflection. I have to admire the hard work by many of you working to capture student interest and working with the smaller classes.

Like Kevork, who posted the same to the SD list and does some fantastic work in the VET IT area, I am also keen to hear from others on the list about what other schools found to work. There is an active DLTV VCE committee that is meeting early December. We will be looking over these stories.

Personally, I have been describing our entire VCE subject as Applied Computing, the name on our study design. It’s only when push comes to shove with year 11 course selection that I unpack the SD and DA flavours and units etc.

Regards Roland

We offer Game development/animation electives at Year 10 and Applied Computing at 11 which have decent numbers in them (almost full classes both semesters for Y9 and 10, about 15 or so for Year 11). We are finding that students are put off by Data analytics as a subject title. We are removing it and switching to Software Development in 2023 and beyond as we are finding this is meeting the needs and interests of the students coming through the lower year levels as they want to do 'coding'. We can't run Data Analytics/Software Dev side by side as it will dillute the pool of students even further. As others have stated, it's definitely dropped off over the years. I had 2 classes of 16+ students in the final year of the Informatics study design. It's a shame 🙁

I don’t know if C# in year 10 may be too much for them but the kids that do get through and do well tend to go into computing and do extremely well in Software Development. I have a girl working on voice to text and text to voice in C# in year 10 and has most of it working really well.

Here I am 23 years later and there are no senior classes at all in year 11 and 12 in any digital technology subjects. Over the years I have taught VCE Computing, IB ITGS and VET Digital Media and none of them are now running. I had only 5 students in year 12 VCE in 2020. I only had 10 students in year 10 computing this year.

We do have cases of small classes in specialist maths, language and product design, and a couple of others. I'll count my blessings this year, but I have the feeling the school might not be so generous next time around. Thank goodness for my HHD method :-)
