[Informatics] Criteria 3: Validation Techniques

You can use Excel to validate…. But it’s best to validate at the original point of data entry. (eg Google forms not allowing a date in the future, not allowing text in a number field…)

To validate in Excel set up a validation rule to disallow clearly unreasonable data - same examples as above.

Thanks for your reply.

I am still need some clarity.

  1. when students use Excel to validate data what do they need to do.

  1. What should I be looking for when I am marking their work for this Criteria?

Validation is part of data collection so using Excell to validate data is not the same as manipulating it.

Jayanti,

In my view , in context of Excel, that means, prior to applying formula, charting and other manipulation (sorting/filtering etc), using validation rules, and conditional formatting (even alignment based on data type (text right and number left) in cells)

If using Access, input masks (when entering data manually), validation rules and required settings.

Criteria 3: Selects and applies complete set of validation techniques that result in dataset that has full integrity

Hi,

I am trying to understand what is it that students need to do to demonstrate the above criteria.

Since, I have taught Software Development for many years where the "electronic" validation technique is the code written to check user input, I am just not able to get my head around what I need to look for.

From my understanding, Criteria 3 is all about data collection and Criteria 4 is about Manipulation of data.

Manual Validation would be to proof-read the data-set and check to see if there are any anomalies, discrepancies and "odd" data. Ignore these i.e. delete them (use screen shots to show before & after data). But what about electronic validation? How do students demonstrate this?

Can someone clarify this please.
