[Informatics] Codifying Data

James, I would think that the Yes/No is already codified/quantified. Putting
numbers to it is just a convenience for processing.

The thing with fully qualitative data is to codify it into set "chunks". For
example, if you ask a completely open ended question such as "What is your
opinion of the new SupaCreme Strawberry Delight ice-cream?" You examine all
your responses and find they go all the way from

It made me vomit - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - to - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I have never tasted anything so delicious

You might decide to codify those wide ranging responses on a five point
scale to make processing easier.

Another quick example

You might codify a response to a Yes/No questions as being

0 - No

1 - Yes

I find the purpose is to quantify qualitative data more than anything else
to then perform some sort of data analysis.

Hi all,

Sorry if these questions have been asked before.

First time teaching Informatics (did teach Applications previously) and I
was wondering how people taught codifying data? Also as I have never had to
do this before does any one have an ELI5 (explain like I am 5) version of
what codifying qualitative data is. Any resources would be greatly
appreciated.

Cheers,

Ben.
