[Informatics] Predecessor, dependency question - Gantt charts

Hi Tony,
The main reason you’d like to uncouple milestones with tasks is that the dates generally don’t change, unless agreed to by both parties.
In other words, if your critical tasks are delayed a milestone is missed.
An issue with the SAT is that if a key milestone is missed (such as the end date), the consequence is a fail.
In light of this, I think I’ll be getting my students to adjust their milestones to be completely separated from dependencies, so that the students have a visual of when they are looking in trouble due to task overrun (as they no doubt will be) in getting the work completed by the due date (which is unchanging).
I certainly would like the PM tool to indicate if a milestone is complete or not (green v red), but Ganttproject is limited in that regard.
Lucas

Thanks Lucas
Like all of us, just want to give best advice to students, they were confused.

If you want to follow precise PM theory – what he said.
Just gets a bit confusing for some students when you have a task that precedes a milestone as a predecessor of a task that is following a milestone, that’s all.

I don't think it's a significant philosophical drama, but...
I'd say one task can only be dependent on another task. A milestone is not a task; it's a psychological event (it just happens with no resources or time allocation.)
So, I'd connect a dependent task to the task preceding the milestone - the one whose termination triggered the milestone.
Or not.

Hi All,
I have told my student that dependencies should not be linked to milestones (no duration, but a key date), but to tasks, and now I am second guessing myself.
Can a milestone have a dependent task? and can a milestone be a predecessor to another task. I think not.
Any consensus?
