Hi all
I’d certainly consider running Units 1 and 2 at Year 10. You can then run Informatics and Software Development every second year. Much preferable than trying to combine Year 11 and 12 in the same classroom.

Good point Mark, briefly entertained this notion one year. Another thought was to offer units 1,2 at year ten as an extended study then assemble a unit 3,4 class from the remaining year 11 and 12s.

In my teaching career I rarely met a year 11 student who could handle IT units 1+2, but not Info or SD.

Similar to what Mark said. I have taught at a school that ran the Units 12 concurrently with 34. The way the timetable was structured allowed both year levels one to one class time and then a double session where all kids were on a the same time. At times this required a little bit of juggling but it was possible :)

Units 1 and 2 are not substantially different in content or level of difficulty to a lovechild of Info+SD.
Schools who can't run all units will often offer Info one year, and SD the next. Then back to Info.
Kids can benefit because they can claim a unit 3/4 subject during their relatively-quiet time in year 11.

Could hardly believe that within five minutes of reading your post, I had a call from our College Ops giving me a heads up that we may have to combine Year 11 (6 students) with a Year 12 (13 students) class. Had to check your email to see that it wasn't in fact an email from our school. Doesn't bear thinking about what 2018 will look like.
I said we can do it, but it's going to be difficult ...
