[Informatics] Slighty off topic BYOD question

Isn't every fast food outlet, airport, coffee shop etc able to provide
connectivity for just about any wifi-enabled "BYOD" device that comes in
the door?
Is domain connectivity absolutely essential? Is it just for access to
printing and maybe file storage - and if so, is that worth it?
