[Informatics] A nasty SAT surprise

I’m not sure the ‘if’ necessarily means that utilizing qualitative data is optional.
I suppose it’s in the semantics of it, but I think that the admin PDF is trying to hint to students that qualitative data must be codified when used in activities such as our SAT.
It might be optional for them to use qualitative data but for them to achieve higher than a 5 for the criterion, my reading is that they will need to include both qualitative and quantitative data.

I guess qualitative data is optional, if you are happy to get a lower grade. You also bring up the important point that you do have to read the whole rubric to get an understanding of what to do and not to do, which does add confusion and is certainly not how I have taught kids to read the rubrics I have created. I’m also still struggling with a referencing system being considered equal to acquiring all that complex data.
And just to be clear, I think you mean acquiring “2 types of data” not “2 data types”. My IT Crowd can’t quite get their head around that these are completely different things. It’s a shame I can’t even use a synonym of type since “types of data” is clearly defined in the glossary.
I really appreciate you picking up on this sort of thing and asking questions Mark. It makes me think more about what we have to do and I’m sure helps keep many of us on the same page. Keep it up!

Have you noticed the nasty surprise in the SAT?
Page 2 of the SAT admin info PDF says "If qualitative data is collected, there must be evidence of how it is codified." This clearly implies that the use of qualitative data is OPTIONAL.
But now look at the assessment criteria for criterion 2 on page 7.
The '5-6 marks' and '7-8 marks' descriptors both insist on the use of 'both qualitative and quantitative data' (Q+Q)
To make matters worse, the need for Q+Q is not repeated in the '9-10 marks' descriptor where most people automatically look for a list of all the qualities of a top-performer.
Unlike the needs for primary+secondary, and at least 2 data types, the need for Q+Q is not mentioned anywhere else in the SAT admin PDF - it can only be found deeply buried in the assessment criteria.
This, I feel, is unfair. Grrrr.
