Thanks for the ideas, Lucas. It's not easy for me to tell which criterion is actually applicable.

"specifications for creating the information" seems to me to refer to the information's qualities rather than that of the data, but what qualities need to be specified?

It's obviously important since it's the first thing mentioned in the SAT admin info PDF's 'Nature of the task' section about the data sets and info derived from them.
The remaining 3 dotpoints (IP, validation/manipulation, security) are spelled out clearly under 'Scope of the Task' > 'A collection of data sets' but there is no explicit reference to 'specifications for creating the information' there...
The only other text relates to data requirements (primary/secondary, collection methods, digitisation, codification) but is this relevant to 'specifications for creating the information'?
Surely 'data requirements' or 'data specifications' would be more apt.

Maybe Paula can clarify this.

By the way, in your reply you include, "Gathers the data ethically and uses appropriate methods e.g de-identification / consent forms (if primary)"

Can you tell me where you found the requirement for ethical data collection?
I can only see legal compliance mentioned in the VCAA SAT publications.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark

I think it’s the manner in which the student gathers (acquires) and checks (validates) the data. This means that they gather:

• Data from primary and secondary sources

• Multiple complex data sets, using different data and states (I assume VH will need this, not just H)

• Gathers the data ethically and uses appropriate methods e.g de-identification / consent forms (if primary)

I want to see all of this from my students in response to that dot point.

Use the rubric – it helps to explain the more vague statements.

Ok. No responses. Time is short. I'll have to assume that it refers to the nature of the data that need to be collected, e.g. To support a hypothesis that cancellations of public transport causes road accidents you need...
1. Data on the number of trains cancelled.
2. Data on number of car accidents.
3. Statements by drivers that train cancellation caused them to drive and led to accident.

Or am I wrong?

Hi, data-collectors

In the Informatics SAT Info PDF, in the data sets section, students are required to show evidence of "the specifications for creating the information". (p.2)

Can someone explain or exemplify what sort of 'specifications' are intended?

Does it mean things like "the information must be accurate, timely, complete" etc?
Or "It must be information about Australian cases in the past 10 years"?

It's a bit too vague for me to get a handle on.

Thanks in advance
Mark
