Heya Lucas,
I wasn't intending the activity to be a technique to come up with a hypothesis. Your table below is great for that, thanks.
In the SAT we have to use complex data and produce and multi-modal solution to get a decent mark. I'm just trying to make sure kids can do this as quickly and easily as possible, particularly in unit 4. Usually in research, you would come up with a hypothesis then choose the most appropriate form of data to test it and present your results in the most appropriate format. I agree that collecting quantitative data through surveying would be a wise move.
Regarding Primary and Secondary - (brain overload warning!)
Until last Monday I was running with Primary Data is as data the researcher collected themselves through interview, surveys, obs etc, while secondary data is sourced indirectly from data that has already been collected perhaps not for the purpose of the study.
But....
If the data you can get is raw data on your topic and not an interpretation then Paula certainly indicated last Monday that this could be considered primary data. Raw data and primary data are often used interchangeably. I'm not so sure Judy considered ABS data to be primary data.
Looking through a bunch of secondary sources on the internet, census data is listed as both primary and secondary data, there is no apparent consensus, which is not something we are unfamiliar with!
This is further confused by the terms Primary Source and Secondary Source which is not really the same as Primary data and Secondary Data but often lumped together.
So I think it comes down to you using "primary data" or a "primary data source" and whether you believe data from a primary source becomes your primary data or is just their primary data.

Hi Heath
Something I shared with the DLTV session on Friday was this template, which helps students to generate a hypothesis that contains a prediction and two logical variables that can be tested. (first main part of Criterion 1).
It's based on what Judy Zuccon shared in the main SAT session on Monday:
More or less of
Leads to
More or less of
Because of
Reason
(independent variable)
(dependent variable)
Listening to increased amounts of music during class
Leads to
Lower test scores in exams
Because of
A lack of concentration when learning key concepts
Marrying before the age of 25
Leads to
A higher percentage of marriage breakdowns
Because of
Not knowing their partner deeply
OR
Lack of maturity
In relation to Primary Quantitative I'd argue (maybe not successfully) that ABS data is generally grouped by State or by age or some other value and therefore it's value added and should be treated as Secondary. It's probably a moot point, but it's worth trying to get student to write surveys that will return both quantitative and qualitative results through intelligent use of open/closed questions. So I am going to encourage my students along this path, one which you have noted.
The only other thoughts are:
- Help students develop an understanding of what complex data is (Criterion 2). From my understanding from the SAT training day, it's 2 of text/number/sound/image. A good survey and some detailed Secondary Quantitative datasets should make this doable.
- When introducing referencing systems to your class confirm what are the key pieces of data that are required when creating a reference for a datasource (they generally are the same for all 4 systems, with just a bit of formatting/rearranging) - this is also Criterion 2, but when students are gathering data it would be terrible to need to recreate a reference later when they can do it at the time.

Subject: [Informatics] SAT - Hypothesis feasabilty activity
Dear Team,
I've been processing last Monday's gathering. Here is a DRAFT of an idea to start with so that students can see if their hypothesis will be suitable for the SAT. Feel free to share your opinions, use, modify or delete!
Cheers,

The Big Project
Part 1: Feasibility Study / Plan
Come up with a hypothesis you want to look at. I cannot give you a hypothesis but we have gathered a number of data resources you can use and access.
There are a number of requirements set by the VCAA that your SAT must demonstrate to get full marks. This task will help you make sure that you can gather all the resources you need for these requirements in both Units 3 and 4.
My Proposed Hypothesis (this can be refined once the feasibility is completed).
Required for full marks
Examples
What can you gather?
I can find Primary Quantitative (numerical) data on this hypothesis
Eg ABS Raw Data.
Survey data you can collect yourself.
I can find Primary Qualitative (categorical) data on this hypotheses
Pick a bit of an issue so you can gather people's opinions on this topic
I can find Secondary Data in a multimedia format on this hypothesis
OR Primary multimedia format data
EG - Media coverage, Youtube clips, facebook comments
EG - Photos, Video clips etc that you take.
Is there other data you can think of that you would like to collect?
Categorise it.
