VET is a popular area inNSW, and I'm dual accredited in IT and
Hospitality. At the moment we are in the first year of the HSC of a new
syllabus for VET-IT. We currently teach it to years 11 and 12, but we are
trialling varoious courses in year 10 with a future look at
including in School Certificate (if that lasts, which I doubt). I'm
actually a graduate from both Deakin and Monash Univeristies for the final year
of my BEd, post grad Cert and MEd, and really notice the differences in the
curriculum of both states. I have also maintained contact with various
people I completed my courses with. In fact I had one come up at the end of
Term 3 to have a look at how we do things in my school. Yes, our Maths
curriculum is very rigorous and demanding, and there is so much to cram into 7
terms.<br>

I'm actually not currently teaching the VET-IT as IT in NSW has been dealt a
blow with a reduction in student numbers, and in many schools here, they have a
"thing" about women teaching IT. I know the syllabus is
available at the following website www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au . You
can also go to the www.govet.nsw.edu.au site and get more information
about resources. Many of the RTOs develop their own training packages for
use in their school districts. I've not been able to get my hands on the
IT one yet, but it only came to the school at the end of the year. I've
been a bit slack last year in trying to get any IT info as I was just trying to
work out a new school and system.<br>

its interesting and informative to hear how some in other states are 'doing IT
' too. What type of inroads does the VET subject offerings have up there, eg
Certificate I,II,III in Info Tech etc using the ICA05 training package? I am
embarking down that road myself and feel my decision to 'push that barrrow' in
my school for the yr10/11 levels will offer both greater scope and skills, plus
improved interest for next years IT pupils. Plus, its nationally accredited
training so adds to the (dare I say it) validation of a national curriculum
being proposed ahead of us. The VET system certainly offers a stricter
structure than VELS does! Must be something about the NSW curriculum, recently
completed a postgrad maths course to accredit me for year 11/12 maths teaching
and your senior maths is bloody hard work! (but I enjoyed the challenge...)<br>

Interesting to read the VIC concept of IT in curriculum, and how it's
changing. In NSW we have Technology (ICT) as a compulsory integration
across all KLAs. However, we have to teach a minimum number of hours (for
the life of me, I can't remember the exact number......holiday mode has just
kicked in) in Technology (Mandatory) in years 7 and 8. By the end of year
10, as part of the School Certificate, the students do a Computer Skills
Test. This assesses their knowledge and skills in ICT that should have
been taught across curriculum areas for 4 years. I've been teaching the
ICT component in Tech Man since its inception, and love the scope it has to
offer the students. At my current school, we use ICDL (epautotrack) to
enhance the skills and knowledge of our year 8 students in a Digital Media
Design unit. This involves the planning and construction of their own
webpages using Dreamweaver. It's been great to use with the IWB.
Actually showed a friend from down South d!<br>
uring the year and they could see the merit......mind you, we both learnt
a few things as well!!!!<br>
<br>
Oh, and don't forget to mention the Ludites with the 19th century
methods..........they still exist in all schools!!!<br>

Year 7 IT has bitten the dust at my school for 09..yep, its been VELSIFIED! and
integrated etc...blah, blahh,.<br>
Already, some staff from other subjects have commented about them a)finding
time to integrate the IT skills into their courses and, der.., b)have they the
skillset to cope!<br>
Now luckily for me, I can also teach Maths and now, VET(being Cert IV
accredited now!), so for me, opportunities have opened if I chose to move back
to the city..which I havent as yet! My load next year is ALL I.T. with the Cert
II and III at yr 10/11 by my own creation(the boss told me I could do as I
wanted - either VET or mainstream based, so I chose VET. Also developing
a couple of projects in I.T. for my school next year to 'reinvent' and
'energise', the subject area here at St.B's.<br>
Plus, as a bonus, I get to pretty much run my own ship in the subject next
year!<br>
So, if anyone is can use me in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Melbourne</st1:place></st1:City>
to teach in 2010(no contracts!) - let me know next year - and lets
negotiate! Offers in other states also considered, plus offers in
industry will be entertained if available!! I alway like to keep my
options open, so if the money's right, who knows!<br>

One thing is certain for 2009, and it is very likely to be change.<br>

There has been some disquiet brewing how many secondary schools have<br>
quietly dismantled technology and IT areas of the curriculum,<br>
sometimes under the broad aim to create 'integrated' subjects. In<br>
reality, the result has sometimes been a poor caricature and does not<br>
provide any real scaffolding to encourage students to take up IT or<br>
trade subjects. The reasons are of course quite complex but this and<br>
other directions taken by schools have not helped the skill shortages<br>
that are looming in both areas.<br>
<br>
I note that QLD has just put IT and technology back onto the radar.<br>
There will be 12 domains offered over 3 years (Years 10-12). These are<br>
English, Maths, The Sciences, The Arts, HPE and Personal Development,<br>
History, Geographical Studies, Human and Social Sciences, Design and<br>
Technology, Business Studies, LOTE, and Information Technology. Each<br>
domain will have a core and electives (specialist, extension and<br>
transdisciplinary). With the senior phase now being Years 10-12,<br>
'core' is really Year 10. .. yes, you read this right .. IT will have<br>
it's own domain - Information Technology.<br>

Considering that some of the VELS was inspired by the New Basics<br>
program from QLD, it is interesting to watch this development, those<br>
surrounding the national curriculum and the future of the VELS in<br>

We've been without year 7 and 8 IT for the past two years. It was the dream<br>
of the administration for years to fully integrate IT in the junior school,<br>
and used the introduction of the year 7 - 8 Learning Centre to do it, saying<br>
that it was mandated with the Learning Centre. IT still operates with<br>
electives at years 9 and 10, and they are popular with the students.<br>
<br>
I yearn for IT to be put back into the curriculum, even lumped with all of<br>
Technology as it used to be, but to have it as a domain of its own, that<br>
would be pretty special.<br>

I believe, in schools there is a confusion between student confidence<br>
with technology and competence with technology. There are several<br>
research reports out there that talk about Multitasking Generation and<br>
how teachers and parents are often blinded by students who can easily<br>
adapt to technology, and they perceive this confidence as the students<br>
having advanced technology skills.<br>
<br>
Yes the kids are confident and they pick things up quickly, but often<br>
their computing habits lack substance.When I used to teach Year 7 and 8<br>
IT many years ago, we used to focus on supporting IT across the various<br>
subject areas building effective information processing skills so that<br>
the kids could produce quality work. Most of what students do with<br>
computers isn't necessarily good quality - it has bells, but there is no<br>
focus or completion of tasks. Students need to know how to type properly<br>
and I don't think that there are any short cuts with this skill. It is<br>
better for their confidence in using the computer and their their health<br>
(ergonomically). As for the basic skills in WP, SS, DB .... these<br>
fundamentals allow subjects to jump right in and teach appropriate ICT<br>
units rather than having to back-track with kids and teach them simple<br>
information skills such as adding a header and footer.<br>
<br>
Lets not confuse the technology confidence generation with the<br>
technology competent generation and giving kids laptops does not mean<br>
that they automatically assume these skills overnight. Giving kids<br>
laptops without these skills can sometimes do more harm than good.<br>
<br>
I am all for appropriate integration of IT across the curriculum, but<br>
unless schools are willing to train non-IT teachers with the skills<br>
needed to run effective IT units they need to keep their junior IT<br>
classes in one form or another. I have worked in many schools and not<br>
many of them are willing to invest the PD time in their teachers to<br>
effectively run a fully integrated ICT program in schools.<br>
