<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#1F497D">I also use the NCSS challenge for this assessment and it’s one of my favourite units. The kids learn so much and get really enthusiastic. I split up the assessment with 50% for competition, 15% for a careers
investigation, 20% for a test and 15% for their journal entries.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#1F497D">Most lessons I teach a little about general concepts they need and devote a large amount of time to working on the challenge. I tend to teach them how to use the python interpreter on their computer, using the
debugger, planning a program, searching for extra assistance, …<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#1F497D">There’s also always a couple of kids who need a lot more support getting started and it’s easier to do so in this environment because the stronger ones already have a lot of support in the course to move forward.

<p class="MsoNormal">Ok, I mandate a GoogleDoc Journal with each student to capture the work and time spent. As some of the learning is to be done outside class, I still use some time at school to cover unit 2 theory and other topics. Last year I enjoyed linking
up with a year 11 colleague each week via teleconference class to swap solutions and reflect upon answers. Compared to my coding, Catherine totally rocks at programming and inspired my girls to push on to year 12.<span style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-fareast-language:EN-AU"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I gave away small prizes for random effort etc new syntax errors etc. Occasionally I would have to run something on the zen of time management (points at worksheets to share) or direct a recalcitrant to the Monday homework club (points
finger at timetable). If work was not done by the end of the week, I called patents to explain the challenge (huge sigh). Don't leave it to the weekend to do unless you are a teacher.<o:p></o:p></p>

of dates with their journal entries. I also make a point of scanning the dates in the journals after each session so students don’t think they can get away with fabricating something right at the end.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
