My 2 cents worth....

>From what I can see, the new Training Package is too large for us to teach
at VCE level.
Nominal hours for units (currently being debated/organised) seem like they
will far exceed
what we are used to now. Whatever happens with the Training Package, the
VCAA still needs
to place their "rubber stamp" on it in terms of what is an acceptable course
at VCE level
and it may just be that units covered will only form part of a new
Certificate (not a complete one).
This then poses issues for pathways for students. I would like to think that
the VCAA would
also consider the possibility of a VCE (no VET) Multimedia subject where
(ahem) "we" could have
our own study design and remove the relative "vagueness" of a Training
Package that keeps us
guessing every year come exam time.

Cheers,
TJ

-----Original Message-----
From: vet-mm-bounces@edulists.com.au [mailto:vet-mm-bounces@edulists.com.au]
On Behalf Of claire
Sent: Monday, 14 April 2008 1:03 PM
To: VET Multimedia Teachers' Mailing List
Subject: Re: RE: [vet-mm] changes to training package - any more info?

Hi Brian,
As yet the details of new training package have not been published so it is
difficult to discuss.
I think the biggest issue will be confusion between the 2 names of these
offerings..
The training package Film, TV, Radio and Multimedia will be called "Screen
and Media", which sounds very like VCE Media Studies. This will be a problem
as students and parents will have difficulty distinguishing the two.

There has been a precedent for calling the VET in schools program a slightly
different name to that of the official TP name, so it may be that it is
possible to avoid confusion in the naming. At one stage, I think we heard
that the Cert 2 was called "Interactive Digital Media" but not sure of
details. Would that name be sufficient to distinguish it from VCE Media?

The actual content of the new MM certs is as yet unknown, but I'm sure the
units of competency will be similar to what currently exists and certainly
not overlap the VCE Media, anymore than it might do now?? I think the skills
and advantages offered by VET MM or whatever it will be called certainly
warrant it being offered alongside VCE Media. In fact, students could really
benefit from doing both, as if they do Vis Comm and IT along with VET MM.
They are complementary subjects not alternatives, in my opinion!

It's difficult with tight school deadlines, but if possible wait for some
VCAA decisions before making yours.

Regards
Claire Bloom
Warrandyte High

> Brian Pearce <BPearce@clc.vic.edu.au> wrote:
>
>
>
> Does anyone else think it will be difficult to justify running the new
> VET Media Certificate and the VCE Media studies course at the same
> school ?
>
> >From the info I've seen it seems it will be difficult to distinguish
> them apart, unless the teacher has control over which of the possible
> UOCs are offered and chooses to make it as different as possible.
>
>
>
> Brian Pearce
>
> CLC
>
>
>
> ________________________________
>
> From: vet-mm-bounces@edulists.com.au
> [mailto:vet-mm-bounces@edulists.com.au] On Behalf Of ARNOTT Suz
> Sent: Monday, 14 April 2008 10:12 AM
> To: VET Multimedia Teachers' Mailing List
> Subject: [vet-mm] changes to training package - any more info?
>
>
>
> After the discussions when the changes came out I have to say I looked
> through the links
>
> http://www.ibsa.org.au/downloads/CUF07_v1_mapping_summary.pdf
>
> and was waiting to hear which units were likely to be included in the
> VET in schools units....
>
> Well today I got a flyer from edsonic with support materials, and the
> list of units....
>
> Which are definitely reflecting the screen and media.
