Here is how we set up laptops - I dont know if this will be helpful or
not, as I am just a simple technician and not a network guru -<br><br>
For years we have used Netscape as the school browser and email client.
It was easy to have the login script write stuff in the Netscape ini file
to set it up for whoever logged in. Because Netscape does not work with
our present intranet, we now use FireFox browser and Eudora for email
(because it is configurable remotely). So we are used to having 2
browsers - use Firefox at school and IE at home, and have different proxy
settings in each. Recently my boss has devised a 'proxy.pac' to put in
the 'automatic configuration script' bit of IE that detects where the
lappy is being used (home or school) and sets the proxy accordingly so
that IE could be used anywhere without the user having to change
anything.<br><br>
As for logging in - we use the Novell Client here that zaps the Windows
XP welcome screen, and I encourage users to use the 'workstation only'
option on startup, then when the lappy has finished its startup routine
(ie the HDD light is off) double click the Novell client icon and login
to the network as necessary.<br><br>
However, where I can (which is most machines) I have set the lappies (and
the lab PCs) to login automatically to a default local user ('student')
by running 'control userpasswords2' and clicking off the 'users must
enter a username etc etc' option.<br><br>

Well the 10 year old girls get the hang of it easy enough. Sometimes I
think 'staff' just refuse to learn. <br><br>
