<DIV>High schoolers from across the state who have used space-age software and
industry-standard manufacturing technology to design-test-make Formula 1 cars
are about to compete in Ballarat for a place at the 2011 F1 in Schools
Technology Challenge National Finals. </DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>The teams are part of a nationwide technology competition involving 35,000
students which aims to inspire, guide and equip young people into engineering
and manufacturing-based career paths.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Ballarat's champion team from the 2010 F1 in Schools World Finals in
Singapore will be there to encourage the next generation of young
innovators. </DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Less than a month ago "Basilisk Performance" from Sebastopol College - a
part of Team Australia - won the coveted Best Engineered Award and finished 5th
out of the 25 teams from 18 nations. They also won the Best Portfolio Award and
were a finalist for the Best Pit Display. They continued the trend set by Team
Australia winning Best Engineered for the fifth time in six years. As part of
their prize they met F1 drivers Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa,
Kamui Kobayashi, Williams F1 technical director Sam Michael, toured the Vodafone
McLaren pit garage and saw the Singapore Grand Prix.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Students are tasked with designing a miniature F1 car using 3D engineering
design software, conducting aerodynamics studies using Virtual Wind Tunnel
software, creating “G-code” to program a Denford manufacturing centre to cut the
shape out of block of balsa, using rapid prototyping technology and exotic
materials to make wheels and wings, doing further aerodynamics testing in mini
smoke and wind tunnels, then racing the car on a 20-metre twin lane race track.
Powered by a standard CO2 canister the cars complete a lap in little more
than a second.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>The competition is very tight. Only two Victorian teams will make it
through to the 2011 National Finals at Eastern Creek International Raceway next
March. At that event the best two teams in the nation will be selected to form
Team Australia 2011.</DIV>

<DIV>Australia is the most successful nation of the 33 that participate being
world champions in 2006...2nd and 3rd in 2008...2nd, 3rd and 4th in 2009...and
2nd and 5th in 2010.</DIV>

<DIV>F1 in Schools is run in Australia by the not-for-profit organisation,
Re-Engineering Australia Foundation, which is sponsored by the Defence Materiel
Organisation, Cisco Webex, ResMed and the Victorian Government.</DIV>

<DIV style="FONT-SIZE: 11px">Not-for-profit organisation Re-Engineering
Australia Foundation Ltd was founded by Sydney engineer Michael Myers in 1988 (a
fellow of Engineers Australia). Passionate about reversing the national skills
shortage, Michael wanted to inspire, equip and guide more young people to pursue
technical careers, eg. engineering, industrial design, manufacturing. Original
patron was the Hon. John Button and, following his passing away, the new patron
is Dr Peter Farrell - CEO & Chairman of the ResMed Corporation. REA launched
the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge to Australia (largest school technology
competition in the world - 33 nations, 9M students). REA has grown it to 35,000
high school students from 350 schools across Australia. 37% girls participation.
REA has begun engaging with primary schools...students in Grade 5 and 6 are now
using million dollar engineering software and professional-standard
manufacturing equipment. Another 100,000 students make use of the same
technology for their non-F1 curricular work. REA’s goal is to reach 900 schools.
Michael has conducted extensive research into the psychological drivers of young
people and this data has helped make the program such a success.. REA has been
recognised with numerous awards inc. Prime Ministers Award for Excellence
(twice), Engineers Australia Presidents Award, The Warren Centre Award.

DISPLAYS.<BR><BR>High schoolers from across the state who have used space-age
software and industry-standard manufacturing technology to design-test-make
Formula 1 cars are about to compete in Ballarat for a place at the 2011 F1 in
Schools Technology Challenge National Finals. <BR><BR>The teams are part
of a nationwide technology competition involving 35,000 students which aims to
inspire, guide and equip young people into engineering and manufacturing-based
career paths.<BR><BR>Ballarat's champion team from the 2010 F1 in Schools World
Finals in Singapore will be there to encourage the next generation of young
innovators. <BR><BR>Less than a month ago "Basilisk Performance" from Sebastopol
College - a part of Team Australia - won the coveted Best Engineered Award and
finished 5th out of the 25 teams from 18 nations. They also won the Best
Portfolio Award and were a finalist for the Best Pit Display. They continued the
trend set by Team Australia winning Best Engineered for the fifth time in six
years. As part of their prize they met F1 drivers Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton,
Felipe Massa, Kamui Kobayashi, Williams F1 technical director Sam Michael,
toured the Vodafone McLaren pit garage and saw the Singapore Grand
Prix.<BR><BR>Students are tasked with designing a miniature F1 car using 3D
engineering design software, conducting aerodynamics studies using Virtual Wind
Tunnel software, creating “G-code” to program a Denford manufacturing centre to
cut the shape out of block of balsa, using rapid prototyping technology and
exotic materials to make wheels and wings, doing further aerodynamics testing in
mini smoke and wind tunnels, then racing the car on a 20-metre twin lane race
track. Powered by a standard CO2 canister the cars complete a lap in
little more than a second.<BR><BR>The competition is very tight. Only two
Victorian teams will make it through to the 2011 National Finals at Eastern
Creek International Raceway next March. At that event the best two teams in the
nation will be selected to form Team Australia 2011.<BR><BR>Australia is the
most successful nation of the 33 that participate being world champions in
2006...2nd and 3rd in 2008...2nd, 3rd and 4th in 2009...and 2nd and 5th in
2010.<BR><BR>F1 in Schools is run in Australia by the not-for-profit
organisation, Re-Engineering Australia Foundation, which is sponsored by the
Defence Materiel Organisation, Cisco Webex, ResMed and the Victorian

Schools Technology Challenge to Australia (largest school technology competition

begun engaging with primary schools...students in Grade 5 and 6 are now using
million dollar engineering software and professional-standard manufacturing
equipment. Another 100,000 students make use of the same technology for their
non-F1 curricular work. REA’s goal is to reach 900 schools. Michael has
conducted extensive research into the psychological drivers of young people and
this data has helped make the program such a success.. REA has been recognised
