<div>hi Kevork and all
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Mobile OS ? Because I am in an iPad community I am in favour of iOS --> Last year at Swinburne I did an android OS half day and it was good (scratch like interface)</div>
<div>If you make separate ones then I will go with both</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Today at ICTEV conf the "killer Phrase" for me was 1:1 Self directed learning both at school and out of school</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>effectively it is all about students learning and teachers learning - not teachers being oracles. There was a lot today about peer tutoring (teachers ->teachers, students - > students and students to teachers)</div>
<div>Who controls what we learn, what students learn --> the learners. we can try to control what we tell them but with 1:1 they can control what they learn, when they learn and why they learn.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>So with iOS (& Android) we can help them to learn how to make apps that they can use to help others learn and help others with learning.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>With Unity they can make games etc that they can export to iOS, Android and web base apps</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Today I saw a web base app system , online systems to build simple apps and they are easy</div>
<div>e.g. <a href="http://ibuildapp.com" target="_blank">ibuildapp.com</a>, <a href="http://www.buzztouch.com" target="_blank">www.buzztouch.com</a> and others</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Apparently there is also red foundry .com - uses code pieces to create apps, </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I am also excited about xcode but.... (if you have looked at coding in Unity it is not simple but yr 7 students apparently can use the jigsaw approach)</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>This year NONE of my VCE students have printed in the classroom. They have iPads, can pdf stuff, upload to dropbox, share it with me, </div>
<div>the old fashioned ones even email me sometimes.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>They have insisted on a facebook page (because they are used to it --> I Use email to keep up with the facebook)</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>People want to learn --> let's help them to do it and help them to extend them selves and hopefully they will carry us along with them.</div>

I am about to get a separate IOS on line community ( mailing list ) set up<br>

I had a colleague ask me 3 years ago what I thought elearning would look<br>

This will be true of all learning inevitably. To be clear, we are looking<br>
at the use of these technologies, but influencing/creating the content that<br>
is built on/in/with them.<br>

My students in Yr 12 don't really understand what paper is anymore. Only<br>
under extreme duress do they draw a UCD or DFD on paper and then capture an<br>

Most want to simply use gliffy or other software package and feel it is a<br>
natural part of the learning to master this tool to then answer questions<br>
about an SRS or sample SAC or learning activity.<br>

At this stage which communities ( forums, mailing lists ) do people think we<br>

1. iphone, ipad or just IOS ?<br>

Hi Trav,<br>
<br>
Yes, the investment is not lost on me. I just hope xcode is not a negative<br>
experience for teachers and students due to its difficulties.<br>
I say this because I have taught XNA/Visual C# to Yr 9 and 10 for more than<br>
3 years and most struggled. <br>

The thing with Adrian (And myself) is that our schools have invested a large<br>
amount of time and money into iPad programs and I checked out appinventor<br>
and it seems that they only export to android devices?<br>
<br>
There seems to be a text on "App inventing for iPhones" by Graeme Summers<br>
that I am ordering (Thanks Adrian) and a few of us are trying to organise a<br>
new year 10 iOS app development course. If anyone is interested please speak<br>
up!<br>

Hi Adrian,<br>
<br>
This is all very useful to all of our colleagues.<br>
<br>
I recently completed an Android app writing PD at Swinburne Uni Hawthorn<br>
using appinventor ( see appinventor.org ) and found it very powerful and<br>
effortless in transferring to a phone or sharing with other phones. For<br>
those who don't have a phone an emulator will still allow testing of the app<br>
on Mac or PC. The resources (software, textbooks, completed apps ) are free<br>
online. The programming environment is a "scratch" type with no actual<br>
coding but a GUI to connect objects, add methods, change properties and<br>
parameters. This would translate to a Yr 8 to 10 course so much more easily<br>
than say writing code in XNA or in Objective C I feel.<br>
<br>
There are sections on using multi dimensional arrays, saving to a database<br>
and much more. Is it starting to look like it could slot into Software<br>
Development as a language ? Of course the coding would have to be done in<br>
Java for it to be acceptable. There are efforts to provide a java view of<br>
the Appinventor GUI see http://www.appinventor.org/roadmap<br>
but that would need to be clarified for Units 3 and 4 Software Development<br>
purposes.<br>
<br>
An equally useful discussion would be to compare the competing app<br>
writing and programming options. eg. Cost of registering as a devloper ?<br>
How much will students understand when writing code in a language like<br>
Objective C or C# for that matter ?<br>
<br>
One of the most useful apps in this series I worked on was "Find my car"<br>
which allows recording of the current location using the GPS feature in the<br>
phone and then after moving to another location requesting a map showing how<br>
to find the car again. This interfaced with a voice feature where<br>
instructions are announced on how to find your way back to the car or if<br>
they are in the same spot, the family members you may have lost ......<br>
<br>
All very exciting ...<br>
<br>
Keep well<br>
<br>
