Although it is too late now, if you have someone like this next year then you should apply to have the questions read to them and the answers typed – either by them or the reader. This is not automatically granted but if your VCE co-ord really believes that the student is disadvantaged by their rudimentary literary skills and appalling written skills then you have a fair chance....

Often as an exam marker I have marked papers where the answers have been printed and stuck into the exam booklet. As a teacher I have had students who have had the questions read to them and then the student has typed their answers (on a NON-network computer) and once I had a student whose answers were typed for him. Also another help is that students can apply for extra time in the exam so that they can think through the stuff.

Also be aware that in terms of statistical moderation students like this where they are given special consideration in the exam are out of your group for stat mod. If you have a small clas this can be a problem!!

Also be aware that a student such as Travis’ student with a poor exam result is likely to be so far outside the rest of the group that they will be removed before the stat mod is performed and so will not have an adverse effect on your other students’ results. If they are not far out of the grouping then they will not have an adverse effect anyway!!

When you put in your predictive grades those grades have no actual effect on your students’ results – if the teacher’s prediction is a long way from the actual result then the paper is RE-marked (up or down).
If you have students with poor handwriting then PLEASE teach them to write a little more slowly and carefully. Hard to read exams are hard to mark. Easy to read exams are lovely.

One day we will be able to have students type their answers but there are some issues. However the 1:1 computer initiative should solve most of them!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy the exam and remind your students that there are many paths to what they want a nd most of them are likely to have at least four careers in their lives.
He isn’t right up the top of my rankings as he received poor marks for U3O1 and U4O2, however it’s sad to see these excellent programmers receive poor marks in a Software Development course. On the flip side, my top ranked student is quite an average programmer however is a great writer and really good at integrating case studies into his answers etc, so students like him are advantaged by the structure of the course I suppose.
And yes, his handwriting is APPALLING!
Hi Travis,

You have described half of my cohort!!! Actually – they tend not to be quite as extreme as this for me – but I do have 1 or 2 like this every year. Unfortunately, in my experience, they do very badly. (and by badly – I mean “not as good as they should”) and I think that doing a written exam for these types of students is their Achilles heel. Often I find that their handwriting is very hard to understand too (for a double whammy!)
Cheers,
Colleagues,

In my short teaching career I have taught year 12 Business Management, IT Apps, Cert III Multimedia and this is my first year of teaching Software Development. I have a student that is really concerning me about his performance and I’m sure some of you must have come across this situation before. He is a brilliant programmer – He basically goes home and that’s all he does. He has a website that he has uploaded some games that he has developed to and has even linked in an online high scores table. He has attended most of the Uni courses in holiday periods plus completed a few night courses. He is the only student all year to comprehensively fulfil all of the criteria of the applications in U3O2 and U4O1. However, English is his worst subject. He can’t put pen to paper and has recently sat one of the practice exams for me (The Insight one) and got 7/88, 6 of which were from multiple choice. His comprehension is shocking even though practically he can easily apply things like 2D arrays, quick sorts, binary searches, stacks, queues, etc.

My question is this – How are these type of students treated in the final results? This must be the hardest subject to have rankings in because you give students fair marks for their programs but it doesn’t mean that they can sit down and write about it in a final exam. For example, in Business Management all SACs were tests as was the final exam which made for consistent rankings, however much of the SAC marks this year were for programming skills and their application, but the exam is written.

Has anyone had a student like this before??????

Good luck to all in the exam!
