My 2.2 cents' worth is that regardless of the truth of the "relationship of the physical layer to the Transmission Control<br>
Protocol/Internet Protocol model" part of the KK (no Kevork, I mean "Key Knowledge"), it's far too esoteric to belong in a study design for VCE students.<br><br>How can that dotpoint - which has university graduates arguing <i>minute</i> technical engineering complexities - compare with the next one: "appropriateness of interviews, surveys and observation as methods of collecting data to determine needs and requirements" ?<br>

I am wondering if the word model at the end of the KK statement had a<br>
different purpose than the 4 layer TCP/IP model. Perhaps the intention<br>
was to relate the physical layer of the OSI to the role of TCP ( layer 4<br>
) and IP ( layer 3 ) layers still within the OSI model. Even then, I am<br>
not sure there is a relationship between layer 1 and layers 3 and 4. The<br>
layered model allows development and accelerates evolution, as the<br>
fabulous slide show by John Bellavance outlines. Mark's slide show is<br>
also very helpful in understanding the layers.<br>

Having read around a bit, I was under the impression that the TCP/IP did<br>
not address the physical layer (as in pulse shaping, line voltages etc)<br>
at all, and that it assumed the physical infrastructure was in place<br>
ready to do the bidding of the TCP/IP protocol. My understanding is that<br>
the TCP/IP ends at the Data link MAC protocols - or am I up the creek.<br>
<br>
As usual, the VCAA has left it up the teaching staff to define the<br>
course by consensus.<br>

I assume Kevork has a definitive view????<br>

For quite some time now I've been avoiding this KK because I'd rather<br>
clean a dead dog's ears than spend time on the OSI.<br>

But in the end I had to find the cotton buds and get stuck in, and I<br>
think I have a reasonable overview of the OSI and how TCP/IP maps to it.<br>

But the second part of KK04 really has me baffled: *the relationship of<br>

I know that TCP/IP's Network interface layer maps to OSI's physical<br>
layer (and the data link layer), but for the life of me I can't see how<br>
it's any more significant than any of OSI's or TCP/IP's other layers.<br>

Can someone suggest why the relationship between the OSI physical layer<br>
and TCP/IP is so significant?<br>
Has this relationship been in the papers? Has this physical<br>
relationship resulted in offspring?<br>
Is Mr OSI going to be on Oprah... or the Jerry Springer show?<br>
