In the SRS dox I have seen, Use Case(s) are written descriptions and some are quite detailed. The UCD is a model, a simplistic way of showing what is happening. Diagrams provide another method of understanding. And yes there is a key skill devoted to the UCD in U3O1. But the last Key Skill in U3O1 is to 'write an SRS to document the requirements, constraints and scope' (p41). And I think then we must require the students to describe what is happening in Use Case, which is a valid form of documenting the requirements.

Use Cases are written with care and they explain what happens (user enters weight in kilograms...) . To me, this is very important. To me, the UCD is something I need to learn (and it's not easy) and belongs in U3O1. But the UCD is truly small in comparison with the other items in the SRS, which we must provide to the student in U3O2. A UCD without the text-heavy Use Case is too remote.

My understanding of U3O2 is that the students must take the SRS and do the coding. So, we can provide those details in the Use Cases. On p42 itsays: 'Students develop solutions in response to given software requirements specifications...". I don't think we are required to provide a UCD to the students as part of the /SRS in U3O2. Maybe I need to do more reading.

This is why I am doing U3O2 first. The students will have a series of SRS (cut down or full) dox as examples from me to provide a context for coding their solutions. By the time U3O1 comes up, they will have a solid understanding of what goes into an SRS.
I won't be doing strict text use cases, but the kids should be able to translate a design brief into dot-point processes (use cases) and from that to a UCD. I always read the study design as meaning UCDs... may be wrong!
Hi Mark,

Just doing some follow up on Use Case, and was checking your resources out.

>From this I assume you will not be getting students to write the 'use case' just create the diagram from those provided?

Study design seem to move between uses case and use case diagram... which are in fact different..
