Victoria Research Laboratory Event: September 2010

The Victoria Research Laboratory of NICTA is pleased to announce the
following event in September:

The NICTA Big Picture Seminar will be delivered by Dr Richard M.
Stallman, the pioneer in the development of the free software movement.
Dr Stallman's presentation, Education Across the Nation: Free Software
in Ethics and in Practice, will talk about the Free Software Movement,
which campaigns for freedom so that computer users can cooperate to
control their own computing activities. The Free software Movement
developed the GNUoperating system (launched by Stallman in September
1983, while a student at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT), often
erroneously referred to as Linux, specifically to establish these
functions. He is a staunch advocate for free software and has
campaigned against copyright laws. Stallman graduated from Harvard
University magna cum laude with a BA in Physics in 1974. He
subsequently joined MIT's AI Lab as a programmer. Stallman is the
author of many important free software products such as Emacs, GCC and
GDB. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, 15 September, 2010,
commencing 6 pm in the Copland Theatre, Economics and Commerce Building,
Professor's Walk, University of Melbourne (only a short walk from the
Baillieu Library). It is expected the presentation will last one to one
and a half hours, after which time will be available for questions and
answers. At the conclusion of the event, refreshments will be served.
As a large audience is expected, prior registration will be essential to
attend this event.
