By starting really slow and basic I found they all manage to grasp the concepts of HTML being "containers/boxes" for content, never overlap, and can have different properties depending on the box. I've had a lot of luck with this approach, with many of my non-IT IT students "understand something in IT for the first time"; others tend to accelerate through it and branch off into googling code ideas, codeacademy.com, bootstrap CSS and teacher support.
