<div>Hi,</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I did not teach ITA this year and it's not on next year, although we have a full class in Units 1&2 next year.</div>
<div>Some of the suggestions are very interesting yet I think that in shaping the 3&4 course one needs to have an eye on 1&2. I know that there are no prerequisites for the 3&4 course yet I am finding that the Year 11 course is far too onerous. This is where
some students are likely to drop off. If the Year 11 course were less intense, 2 SACS per semester and as a suggestion, a semester, and the likelihood of a year long research assignment, this would allow students and teachers to get more deeply involved in
certain areas. If this research assignment were tied to a mentor or industry rep that students would have to seek – this would increase student awareness on a consistent basis of what is happening in the outside world. This would then feed back into the classroom.</div>
<div>The year 11 course is where students should have the time to acquire skills and useful or dispositional knowledge that will keep them in good stead for ITA.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Name suggestions:</div>
<div>Digital Technology and Visualisation (the Visualisation concept connotes creativity and process)</div>
<div>Visualising Digital Technologies (Again the term Visualising encompasses the creative and production side of things.)</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>More and more we are seeing increasing crossovers from music and media with digital technologies. This is an area where this subject area should/could take the lead. One of the defining factors is the use of code: look at Processing, Max for Live, LiveCode
as examples of these. Some of Janet's suggestions could be taught in Media. In fact our school has already begun the melding of the 2 areas at the year 9 level with a Media/IT subject on offer.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>The bell has gone, but in closing for now I feel the PSM is a vital aspect of the course. This discussion is great. More to come.</div>

I'm sure many of us have thought about what should be in the new IT course. The name IT Apps gives the impression of quite a narrow focus (on just the applications) so if the new course has a serious change in content or focus then the name ought to reflect
this. Personally I'm not a big fan of "digital technologies", but prefer something like "information and communication" to appeal to a wider audience.<br>
