In doing some virtual team research last year I did
come across an evaluation of various techniques. To get the most out of email
lists, it was suggested that periodically for each thread someone (always the
mysterious 'someone') needs to do a summary of what has been said so far, thus
pulling all the different elements of the discussion together and so helping to
reach a consensus conclusion. I think the idea has merit but getting a 'someone'
or even several of them would be a big problem.

A wiki's an interesting idea, Margaret, but I wonder whether -
in this case - it would thrive. Wikis are valuable for consolidating and
aggregating disparate information sources, but in this case is it possible
that a wiki could actually do the opposite: split an existing and
authoritative information nexus (this list) into two competing sources?

People would either post their thoughts to the list, or the wiki but I
doubt many of those people would have the time or inclination to post to
both.

I realise that a mailing list like this is a very
different animal to a wiki - each tool has its strengths and weaknesses. The
success of the wiki would depend on what it was primarily intended to
achieve... discussion or collaborative resource development. Its charter
would need to be carefully thought out to avoid a possible identity
crisis.

Regards
Mark

OK. Nuff said! Everyone regrets at least one of
their posts and the rest of you have deleted them all
anyway!
What I would like to do is to encourage a discussion
about the study design here so that as you are reading through it, you can
get suscinct answers to your questions - or raise topics that would be
ones that would be good for resource development or PD. There are a
number of experts that subscribe to these lists, such as the examiners,
members of the study design writing team, text book writers, PD
presenters, VCAA employees (and of course, Paula Christophersen). We
are all willing and eager to answer your questions!
Bring on the
discussion,
Adrian Janson

*Important - *This email and any
