I offered to help get rid of some CRT's for staff by adding them to the school pool of monitors we are returning. I think they charge about $20-40 per monitor. It wasn't a big deal as we originally gave away a many of these old monitors. Part of closing the loop is making the retailer / producer think about plans for the long term, correct disposal of the e-waste that they are generating .. schools have an ethical obligation to take back and correctly destroy. It is the least we can now do considering the dump-masters that I once filled with e-waste.

If schools think that donating equipment absolves us of all future eWaste issues, then they are in the same boat as those that give old toxic, old super-tankers to third world countries to scrap and decommission on the beaches. We are all in the same boat.

Regards Roland

PS: Oddly enough, if you have a brand name monitor .. some have a return to
manufacturer policy (I know this is the case for IBM, Apple, HP and
perhaps others)

On 30/03/2008, andrew barry <jagguy999@gmail.com> wrote:

Just ask them for the price, this is something that we now factor into my ICT budget. At our school, safety comes first, so does dealing with eWaste. VITTA have on their website a position statement on this very issue if you need to raise the costs with your school council.

Heavy metal contamination from early Melbourne efforts at dealing with industrial waste is now being recycling back into the Port Phillip bay ecosystem from the channel dredging. If we continue to dump this stuff into landfill, sit back folks and enjoy your gift to the future ..
