That raises two fascinating issues that are worth raising with your
students. As my teacher-librarian is at pains to point out when I explored
backing up the school video collection, we shouldn't confuse issues of archiving
with those for digital storage.

Good archiving demands the skills of a
highly trained and experienced individual to maintain, prune and perhaps the
oversee the ultimate destruction of data in the archive. The expectation that a
school will to archive all the student electronic portfolios work for remote
access beyond their term of stay is probably unreasonable. Commercial software
vendors would like to make us think that a one stop solution will continue to be
supported for another decade and serve school needs. Only a few schools had a
website 10 years ago, I wont try to predict where we will be in another 10. In
20 years we may laugh at many of our quaint ideas and practices.

Another
issue is that of digital decay. Today's
digital documents face a more serious threat: the disappearance of computers and
software able to read them. Some of my older documents can already no
longer be read by MS Office (the list of file imports is getting smaller with
each release). With perhaps some scorn leveled at me by colleagues, I have taken
the lead from the Australian National Library and insist on using a standards
driven format called OpenDocument to archive my work for long term storage.
Without emulators, I will happily buy a bunch of flowers in 2020 for anybody who
will still be able to open my first experiments with Kahootz. (We cannot legally
copy, redistribute or media shift commercial software on that .. hmm, was it
called a CDROM?) If only I could get Easycal working again, I could recover my
first ever spreadsheet .. then again, I could always start with Load Runner and
Canyon Climber .. where did I put that 5.25" drive
hmm :-)

Regards Roland
