Is the Education Union actually doing anything about this sort of stuff
or are we just going to have another strike day to keep Kim Beazley in as
Opposition leader? The whole VELs reporting system is a joke-
if we don't understand how it works so much for making it simple for
parents to understand.

I still can't get my head around awarding C grades for students where we
once awarded A grades and then awarding A grades for students that should
be two year levels ahead of where they're at despite them not having any
exposure to the curriculum at that year level. Unbelievable.

Seven years ago I was able to lobby the support of the Manager of the
Commonwealth Bank (and I am talking about THE Manager of the CBA here),
to sponsor an educational share trading program for interested schools,
(in the thousands of dollars). The Victorian Education Department
didn't want to know about it. A few months later we were given a
mouthful from a consultant, (paid a six figure sum by the department),
telling us that we needed to be integrate education with industry
ie:pathways to education. (Work that out!)

Just goes to highlight that the Education Department and associated
bodies are about Politics rather than Education.

Conference Theme - ICT: Imagination, Creativity & Thinking

³Young people need to develop the creative skills needed in the
workplace

of the future. Fast-moving technology and global communications call
for an

ability to produce creative solutions to complex problems. Creative
teaching

practices can help develop and release students¹ creativity,
increasing

their ability to solve problems, think independently and work
flexibly.²

(DfES, UK, 2005)

Creativity is moving up the school agenda. As it does so, the
emphasis is on

creative thinking applicable across all curriculum areas. It
promotes

originality, collaboration and creative spaces. For children to be
creative

they need stimuli. These may include curriculum, technologies or
buildings

that stimulate expressive responses, but may also include
difficult,

real-life problems that require creative thinking to solve.

Creativity involves thinking or behaving imaginatively. Part of
the

challenge of creativity for both teachers and students is the
willingness to

explore the unknown, to be innovative, to *risk-take¹ and to
collaborate

between classes and schools.

Consider the levels of creative opportunity in your school or
classroom.

? What can you do to encourage creativity in your own practice and in
your

students¹ learning?

? Can the school environment and your classroom be changed to
promote

creativity and imagination?

? Can the organisation of the school day be altered to promote
creativity

and thinking?

The innovative three-day conference program is designed to provide
