font-family:Verdana'>FSA Research into how Attitude to Health Affects Eating
Habits</span></font></b></strong> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=2 face=Verdana><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>The
Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK has carried out qualitative research to
find out more about how people’s eating habits are determined by their
attitudes towards food and health, rather than by other demographic
characteristics, such as age. The research aimed to find out how people eat,
what they buy and why they make certain food choices, to help shape the
FSA’s work on healthier eating. The research was carried out as part of
its Consumer Attitudes Survey.</span></font> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=2 face=Verdana><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>The
findings included the identification of four distinct population groups:</span></font>
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><font size=2 face=Verdana><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>·
Health conscious pragmatists – think that although healthy eating is
important, convenience foods are not necessarily a bad thing. They represent 22
% of the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">UK</st1:place></st1:country-region>
adult population.<br>
· Convenience driven health rejecters - are likely to rank
convenience above health when choosing what to eat. They represent 29% of the <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">UK</st1:place></st1:country-region> adult
population.<br>
· Concerned health advocates - rank healthy eating the most
highly of all the groups and know what a healthy balanced diet looks like and
appreciate being given information about food. They represent 25% of the <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">UK</st1:place></st1:country-region> adult
population.<br>
· Traditional cooking enthusiasts – are enthusiastic
cooks and tend to disapprove of convenience food. They represent 24% of the
