Thanks Roland

Surely the Myki doesn't rely on continuous access to a network? From memory the UK Oyster card (and I think the French Passe Navigo Découverte) is a stored-value card and each in-vehicle transaction just deducts from its stored total on the card, the vehicle does not continously talk to a central transaction centre. This is an established technology. A real-time card to central office system would be a major design challenge (and a strange decision).

Re the free access to public transport - if Google's autonomous car leads to a commercial product, maybe the concept of a drivers licence will vanish. Kids could be taken to school by the vehicle, without a "driver"...
It does make me wonder why they don't just cache all the requests in the box and just upload and reconcile later as the train, tram or bus rattles back into range. If somebody gets a free ride and a small temp debit, they would have to clear it anyway to use the card the following day or as with mine, gets automatically topped up overnight.

I loved using the Oyster card in the UK and believe that this is the way to go. My guess is that there are going to be tweaks and adjustments as we work this all out and move onto more pressing problems. My son has a card and doesn't have to keep begging me for spare change to get to and from school. Priceless.
