<font face="Calibri">Hi Ken,<br>
I love your images, and interesting to see the biro in the photo of the
items banned from schools. I remember back in the 60s when I reached
grade 4 we were expected to use a pen which dipped into an ink well on
the desk. Not only were biros not allowed in class but we were not even
allowed to use a cartridge pen where the ink was stored in a cartridge
within the casing of the pen. No it had to be a stupid pen which you
dipped into the ink well on the desk, you would perhaps write 2 or 3
words and then would need to redip. My work was always a mess of
ink blobs and smudges, but I really felt sorry for my friend who was
left handed and would smudge her work as she moved her hand across the
page. It's a wonder we learnt anything, and only the cleanest,
unsmudged pages of work were ever given a star! Reaching High School
was fantastic as not only could we use biros, but the teachers didn't
care if we went back to printing (I could never master the stupid
manner in which they forced us to join our letters, and could always
print very neatly at twice the rate!)<br>
<br>
Karl Fisch (of Shift Happens fame) has another video called What if?
which looks at the same concepts -
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://thefischbowl.blogspot.com/2006/09/what-if.html">http://thefischbowl.blogspot.com/2006/09/what-if.html</a> <br>
<br>
Yesterday an English teacher here was complaining about the way
Americans spell. I said to her "That's just the evolution of language"
and pointed out that Chaucer would be disgusted at the way Shakespeare
wrote, and Shakespeare would be disgusted at the way we write. <br>
<br>
The evolution of language, social changes, changes in education - we
must accept the changes that each new generation brings to the world.<br>
<br>
Cheers<br>

<pre wrap="">Hi Ros,
I like your analogy (in the blog) of how men in the 1930s were
considered rude if they went out hatless.
Attached are 3 images related to the idea of changes and education.
One picture shows the changes in how popular music has been
experienced over the last 100 years, and another shows the changes in
a school over the same period. A bit of a scary comparison really.
(these are from Mike Sharples at LSRI Nottingham)
The third shows some items that have something in common - you might
ask your colleagues to guess what this commonality is. Usually you get
answers like "all are communication devices" or "all are used in a
modern workplace or in daily life" The filename of course tells you -
they have all been banned in schools at some stage. And some still
are.
I probably have better quality images if anyone wants them
Cheers
