<font face="Calibri">Hi all,<br>
The flip looks great!! Thanks Roland.<br>
Suz - I'm not quite sure why you would want to purchase mobile phones
for use in the classroom - I find that many kids already have phones
which can take excellent photos, video, double as mp3 players, data
storage, email and a connection to the internet, so I don't see the
point in the school purchasing them. Also given the life expectancy of
an average mobile phone (I have yet to own a phone whose battery lasts
the 2 year contract) you will be faced with redundant technology by the
end of 2010. <br>
<br>
I love this blog post on the use of an iPhone in class
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://21csale.blogspot.com/2008/04/phoning-it-in.html">http://21csale.blogspot.com/2008/04/phoning-it-in.html</a> <br>
and some extracts...<br>
"</font>Good thing I didn’t see Steve fiddling with his phone and take
it away before he could contribute to class."<br>
"By the time we figure out how to afford laptops in every classroom,
all
our students may very well have acquired phones with Internet access."<br>
<br>
One wonders how the DEECD guard dogs will police the kids' internet
access via their phones???? Has anyone experienced kids bringing
laptops to school with mobile broadband access? As I have vehemently
argued all along - crossing the road can be dangerous so we teach them
how to look left look right etc, riding a bike can be dangerous so we
teach them to wear a helmet and ride safely, surfing the net can be
dangerous (although probably not as life threatening as crossing the
road or riding a bike) so why are we not teaching them safe surfing
instead of blocking everything and pretending the internet is a rosy
place??? It won't be long until internet access is no longer a school
issue as mobile broadband becomes cheaper (already 1GB for $15 month
from three) and more and more students use it via their phones or
personal laptops (which are also becoming smaller). It only seems like
yesterday when I first heard a student's phone ringing in class, and
the one thing we should have learnt is that it is no point trying to
ban them, confiscate them, or stop kids using them!!!<br>
<br>
Good to see you are embracing the technology Suzi!! This link provides
links to other sites about using mobile technologies in the classroom,
and also includes a great video on how one university has incorporated
the iphone into their students' university life (every student is given
an iphone on enrolment!!) An absolutely brilliant video on using an
iPhone!
