<li class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Century Gothic",sans-serif">The safety of our students and staff from COVID should be front and centre of this. The community of Victoria is in STAGE 4 lockdown so why should this idea
of returning to school be even considered?</span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Century Gothic",sans-serif">The mental health of our students and staff should be paramount rather than put unnecessary pressure on them at a time when they are under enormous pressure,
with home situation, jobs lost, family violence, not seeing family etc etc</span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Century Gothic",sans-serif">I have a strong issue with safety and with kids rushing to get their work done, corners will be cut and accidents will happen.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="">Thank you for your email in regard to the Principal letter that provides information about conducting Essential Assessments onsite.
</span><span style=""><span style=""></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style=""> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="">It is a school-based decision as to whether essential school-based assessment will be conducted onsite. While the Principal letter states that schools are able to conduct essential assessment onsite, it also provides flexible
options that </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:36.0pt"><span style="">‘Schools and non-school secondary providers can delay essential assessments where it is not possible to access the school site during school closure. For those schools and non-school secondary providers
that have made arrangements for assessments to be conducted remotely with assurance of validity, this can continue’.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style=""> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="">In conducting Essential Assessments onsite for Unit 3 and 4 VCE, all providers must follow all COVID-19 related Health directions and Department of Education and Training guidelines as well as Specific controls for Essential
Assessments for VCE and VCAL approved by the Department of Health and Human Services. School-assessed Task (SATs) for Product Design and Technology must not be completed at home without appropriate supervision and competency tests for use of tools and machines
(refer to the Department of Education and Training’s </span><a href="https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ZmSkCp8AyytrrkkIDLoO9?domain=education.vic.gov.au"><span style="">Use of Machinery in Technology Teaching webpage</span><span style=""></span></a><span style="">).
Further advice for school principals and teachers on the remote delivery of learning programs is found on the VCAA COVID-19 website
</span><a href="https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/I5BBCzvOMMillDDhVKKhE?domain=vcaa.vic.edu.au"><span style="">https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/news-and-events/latest-news/Novel%20coronavirus%20update/Pages/SchoolsandEducators.aspx#RemoteAssessment</span><span style=""></span></a><span style=""></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style=""> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="">The purpose of school-based assessment is to rank the school cohort so the VCE Product Design and Technology SAT results for each school cohort should reflect the performance and relative ranking of student results across
the whole assessment scale for these studies. The scores for VCE Unit 3 School-based Assessments are due to VASS on Monday 12 October 2020, and the scores for all remaining VCE School-based Assessments and School-assessed Tasks are due to VASS on Wednesday
18 November </span><a href="https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/dfvzCr8DAAtKKMMUyeUq1?domain=vcaa.vic.edu.au"><span style="">https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/administration/Key-dates/Pages/2020RevisedAdminDates.aspx</span><span style=""></span></a><span style="">.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style=""> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="">All mandated criteria need to be used when assessing student work. However, not all indicators listed for each criterion may be used. Therefore, teachers can use some or all indicators listed for each criterion to form a
judgement about student work. Teachers need to ensure that the same indicators are used for the assessment of all student work at the school and that the conditions to undertake the SAT does not privilege or disadvantage certain groups of students within the
school cohort – this is especially relevant to Product Design and Technology where there are various materials being used e.g. textiles versus wood. Students may not necessarily complete a product in VCE Product Design and Technology; however, the teachers
can still use the indicators listed for each criterion to determine the ranking of their cohort of students. The indicators provide guidance to both teachers and students about the focus of each criterion and place emphasis on the product design process; there
is no one criterion that focuses solely on the finished product.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style=""> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style=""><a name="_Hlk48656577">The VCAA is continuing to take a flexible and agile approach to meeting issues around the coronavirus (COVID-19) and is relying on schools to be similarly flexible and agile in ensuring the continuity
of learning and the delivery of school-based assessment during these times. It is a school-based decision regarding the conditions and arrangements for which school-based assessments are undertaken to ensure they meet the VCE assessment principles, the study
design requirements and the requirements of the VCE and VCAL Administrative Handbook 2020. This may vary between schools and sectors given their cohort, resources and unique circumstances. Given the current situation, flexibility around the delivery of school-based
assessment is expected.</a></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Hi Leanne, </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I hope you are doing OK in these very testing and trying times.. I am sure you have been inundated with questions and queries regarding the latest news published by VCAA regarding SAT ‘essential assessment’ completion at school.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I am a member of the DATTA Vic team and there has been plenty of opinion and points of views in how this is interpreted to what subjects this applies to. I have, as well have many other Product Design Teachers, been hopeful that year 12
VCE could complete the practical element for the course. Knowing the number of changes and restrictions which have been forced upon us all due to COVID 19, I personally believe the timeframe remaining is inadequate for students to complete the practical element.
The majority of my class have started practical work, but there are 3-4 students yet to start and some materials still haven’t arrived as they were due to by the start of this term. My other concern is the inequality across the state, there will be some students
who maybe able to attend school, whilst others maybe in a completely different situation where schools remain closed or parents are not content with their children attending schools, as this even flows onto teaching staff or support staff as well.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The other concern which needs to be raised is the OHS with physical distancing. It is very difficult to assist students whilst maintaining the advised 1.5M distance and again this breeches the code of conduct for all concerned. The timeframe
element will also aid to this OHS concern, with students and staff rushing to complete all practical work within the advised time to keep in line with all the other VCAA subject deadline dates.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">There is still considerable amount of assessment which has already taken place being – Unit 3 outcome 1,2 and 3.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Plus to complete - Unit 4 outcome 1 and SAT criteria points 4-5 (in process).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I believe I can still provide indicative grades based on the above assessment.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Thank you for your time and I hope this information can support the clarity process.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
